Re: Future of SCA fighting
Fencing has always been around from day one however it was not anything like what it has become today. The organization and structure that followed the first events was not based upon fencing and so it had almost no following and no real recognition in the SCA. It was many many years before fencing...

My problem was really that I fell in love with a sport and found out that a winner of a completely different sport could yank the rug out at will, change rules that don't actually affect him, inspire songs... -Patrick Right. You decided you liked a game that had nothing to do with the real game tha...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Being a top rank fencer is not "easier" than being a top rank hard suit fighter. Perhaps it's that attitude that gets people riled up? Skill is skill.. whether it's putting an arrow in a popinjay, getting five knives to stick in the bull, taking out a Don, or defeating a Duke. What I'm see...

I guess im biased.. I started before Fencing was actually something done at events. (rest of ignorant rant deleted) 1st- no, you didn't. Second, thank you for illustrating my point #2 from my previous post. If attitudes like yours were the norm on the heavy field, why in the world would anybody wan...

How many of them do you think would otherwise be fighting heavy if rapier wasn't around? about half... the other half want to be don juan, inigo montoyo, dread pirate roberts, CAPTAIN jack sparrow, etc etc then of course if there was a separate rapier game and they got to see that alone without the ...

Hi, It's time for another thread on this subject. Yes, the come up almost quarterly, but I should'nt necro threads anymore. I'll be good. It's not really that Rapier is a threat it's just that it has significantly put a dent in our heavy fighting numbers. When I started fighting rapier was almost n...

Re: A tent for the Medieval Minimalist...
i don't know where you are from, or when, but there are several "camp" illustrations out there showing nothing more than lean to-s for people. Barracks tents and such are nice.. but there's 10 or so people in them, even though we use them as "Single occupancy" in many cases. But,...

Personally, I'd drill a two small blind holes and put roll pins in them, then drill holes to match in the rattan.

It's crap. complete crap. no WAY will that center gap stand up to repeated shots. As a pretend marshal in my mind, I demand you send it to me for extended testing..
also.. HOLY CRAP THAT'S GORGEOUS! Kudos to the design, and making it reality. that's one damn spiffy helm.

Re: Problem longbow
Ok, to further this topic (and I thank you all for your input and help) as Wolf pointed out the flat of my bow is to the outside, the “D” toward me when I aim. The poundage is 56# at 28” and having fired it 4 times, it unstrung 3 times and I had to restring once. I took Maeryk’s advice and upon clo...

Re: Problem longbow
I agree with Maeryk that limb twist is the common culprit. Look down the length of the bow, like you would sighting in a rifle. The limbs should align perfectly. To help with this, you can take a silver sharpie or pen, and at the very center of the back of each nock, draw a centerline (like you're ...

Let's go back to that rule you posted. It includes the word "intentionally". You are interpreting that word in an extremely broad manner, such that if they get hit in the hand, it was their intention for it to happen. I am interpreting that word in a much more conventional manner, such th...

Re: SCA rules question
At the end of the day this game we play is a game of honor. 90% of the time you have some sorta clue and can either disregard the shot as low, or offer council to your opponent as to why you do not believe the shot was good. As for the wrist deal. Maybe we should take that. Maybe I should take that...

Re: SCA rules question
I think you two are arguing semantics, as I see it. Balin is suggesting that putting a weaponless hand in the way of a shot in any way is intentional, I believe (except in the specific case mentioned in the rules). Maeryk and Kilkenny are suggesting there may be other times that it happens and cert...

Thought this might be an interesting discussion. A lot of people tell me what a great artist I am when they see my armour. I don't consider it art and tell them that. Yes it is. It's only proof that it's not on snopes. Snopes is very consistent and there are even threads on there where people are trying to prove it's false with no luck. So, since you insisted that it was false without proof, I insist that it is true unless proven otherwise. Erm.. you can't prove...

Make sure you get a bandsaw rated for ferrous and "wet work". A woodcutting bandsaw, without a LOT of mods, simply won't do it.. it's not designed to deal with oil, ferrous chips in the guides and tires, etc. the tighter the radius of the cut, the smaller the blade you need, unless you are...
