Hopefully, this whole thing is simply a period during which this information is being evaluated and a decision made. People's issue is with the arbitrary way in which the program was simply turned off with no consultation with the people running it (and while Aedan, the SRM may be nominally in char...

Right now, as we speak, metal weapons are being inspected by the SCA all over the world for rapier combat. And they are expensive. And it's been going ok for many many years. There is a training program to teach them that. It's been going on in rapier for decades. Yes. Rapiers made by established c...

Some core things would have to be made clear. That much I agree with. But applying standards to this project that we do not apply to the other martial arts is simply unfair. But there _ARE_ minimum, society wide standards applied to martial combat. No freon cans, for instance. Minimum armor.. (whil...

But we aren't talking about explosives here. We are talking about period combat with steel weapons - something we can objectively proove is a safe persuit (or rather, a persuit that is just as safe as any form of combat we practice) given a proper set of rules. One could also make the same argument...

It is far easier to kill yourself, and lots of others, with poorly prepared chicken than with a cannon that holds 16 oz of black powder. And yet, the rules covering food preparation for feasts can be found at....? Yes, but cooking is an accepted risk, no? If someone got food poisoning, its unlikely...

All of that not withstanding, the SCA *must* make room for activities that follow it's stated intent. Otherwise, we make a liar of the SCA itself. And being a Society based on Honor, I see no honor in sheilding ourselves in Tax Exempt status while purposfully putting the kabash on activites that fo...

I also want a table to match. I follow the same material and building techniques, substituting only the difference in construction that a larger table would require, using the same methods from other tables made in the 15th century. I make the table match the benches because that is what the "custo...

_WATCH YOUR ASS_ with galvanized or plated metals. If you see floaters when you weld.. (little parachuters of gunky smoke drifting back towards the floor) you _DEFINATELY_ need a vent hood of some sort. The shield gas and the flux are _usually_ not too bad.. but you definately need to watch for the ...

I know my forearms and completely numb. I asked several times for very skilled fighters like Lord Noe to fire shots at my forearms while I stood there...I felt a twinge, sort of like the same feeling I get when I move my arm in the vambrace. If I was fighting, I doubt I would notice it at all. Two ...

AS TO SIDESWORD . . . I know Aedan and I take him at his word. He says that the SEM is uncomfortable with the lack of uniformity in the experiment kingdom to kingdom. Fair enough. The important part of his message though is that the Society Rapier Marshal has folks working on a uniform rule set so ...

And Maeryk, the danger to sidesword is not from musclebound jocks worried that swidesword is horning in on our turf, I know.. that why I said that wasnt the problem. Thats the problem with Combat Archery. Maeryk (and the BOD and SCA Inc have some.. issues. Individually I'm sure they are very nice p...

Im curious about your last statement there. Can you elaborate for me? I mean, im wondering if you're saying that this doesn't have a place in the SCA in general, or what? Thats kinda the BOD attitude towards it.. "there are other groups already doing it.. go there if you really want to do it". We w...

Simple answer: A good shot is a shot that lands with sufficient force for your opponent to aknowledge it. How do you determine how much force is necessary? Calibrate. I think calibration should be required before every bout. Since it isn't, make it a part of your routine. This allows you and your o...

Aaaron.. any chance theres a numb spot on your armor? This topic came up recently. Most people mean it's not documentable when they say it's not period or authentic. I think we should learn to except that is what they mean, it will be almost impossible to change so the way so many people use the words. ick. I'd rather people say "documentable to X" wh...

You just need to tinker with it to come up with some kind of "stop" for the bottom of the baseplate to keep it from going down to far. Having never seen a lance-rest, I have no idea if this is a valid suggestion or not, but hte simplest way would seem to be to leave a "heel" on the base of whicher ...

Have I thrown shots that may have been excessive? Yes, but not deliberately. Last night I cranked up all the way to power through shields, and didn't get through. It was like my Great Sword was an overripe bannana. I wasn't strong enough. Stop hitting shields. They cannot hurt you. My usual trick w...

Pieces that have been buried for several hundred years can get quite distorted. Bones can be crushed by the weight of the earth above them, metal pieces can get flattened or deformed, you get the idea. The fact that a piece of leather survived at all is bucking the odds. It's not surprising that th...

I am sure this started as a safety issue. It seems like the amount of force that can be applied with a jab (for lack of a better term), over the 2 inch surface area required for a thrusting tip for a bastard sword using this form "could" be kind of hard. Other then not being allowed to grasp the ed...

In my ideal world, when halfswording, you would treat the weapon as a spear. I don’t see much evidence for strikes with the blade while halfswording historically. Having been cross checked many times over the years by folks using polearms, I don’t see it as particularly more dangerous...
