Beeswax was *very* expensive (comparatively) in medieval times---why tallow candles were used so much and so would probably not be used on "cheap replaceable items" that would more likely be replaced when looking scraggy. A number of hte pieces I have seen that were waxed at one point are not what ...

yes, and yes. Well, depends on what you are doing. If they are hte bundles I think they are, they are usually not shiny leather.. they are latigo in a variety of colors, and are okay for a lot of purposes, but you wont be doing tooling or dying on them. (Like I said.. I'm thinking these are hte same...

FWIW, thats about what I heard from Denys the Decadent as well, and Gonad, and a couple of others. I _DO_ know they were basicaly students of (I think?) Master WOlf at one time or another, and it has grown from there. I'm also happy as hell to see that they got the BLue Tyger legion this year.. that...

But for your purposes a smoothly-sanded finish should suffice. Poplar is a pretty easy wood to work with, and takes sanding much better than the crappy yellow or white pine I usually work with (that's why I paint! I only use clear finishes if I'm using a hardwood). YARGH! Get a set of cabinet scrap...

Illuminate me: what's the difference between riven and sawed? Long the grain, I understand... but how would you do that against? Sawing forces the wood to be "Straight". That 2x4 you are holding may have come from the most gnarly, twisty pine you have ever seen, and it is just WAITING to "spring". ...

linseed oil is one of the many versions of "oil" that will probalby pass muster. Tung is another. (Though Tung is CHinese, I believe, it gives much the same finish.) You might also think paint.. quite a lot of medieval wood was painted at one point or another in its career, or gilded. Lacquers were ...

I know people here have used thrusty-bucklers.. (basically, a forearm buckler with a thrusting tip that comes out beyond the hand). I guess its an approximation of a Pata. I have one of the simple, single blade ones. (not the ones that open up like an iris leaf when you squeeze the handle-bars together). I have always been told they are punching weapons.. the design on the one I have seems ot indicate that.. it looks more designed to go INTO than to slash cut, though ...

Just so I have my facts straight when presenting the final info to the board of trustee (IE: wife).

Its got the extra-foot option.. that makes the center poles 11 feet, right? and the ridge is 12 feet.. is that a sleeved ridge?

ANd it has the sod cloth, yes?

IF you know what you are lookign for/at, then Ebay and auctions/estatesales/junk sales can be a huge bonus.

I have gotten some really nice planes and shaves and such from all of the above.. that are in good shape and need little cleaning/tuning for use.

_ALL_ of my wifes german dresses are done with one string.. starts tied off at one of the bottom eyelets, then kinda "zig zags" but its only one string.

As far as I know, we have yet to find a single painting (at least of that period) showing the 'modern" shoelace style.
