This cat got burned, you guys keep harping about him not getting more details, but this helmet was advertised as being made by a professional armourer, someone that Brian Price lists in his book as an artist. I know Gijchgar.. (Joe). He is a professional armourer, and quite the artist. The helm (if...

Flashburns from welding. Agg! WHen I was working in the production shop, they stuck another guy in the welding room with me. I wasnt even thinking about it.. so I faced my desk, he faced his at a right angle to me, behind me. I got eye-flashed by him several times.. (my auto-shield wasnt working, s...

Super Sheen, while pretty, might give you a sticky nasty mess if you sweat into it TOO much. I would more likely just saddle soap it, buff it very well after doing that, then make sure it dries after each use and brush it. I dont think the sweat stains are going to _hurt_ it much.. and remember, a c...

Theres one of these in my Grandfathers back yard.. he made a small water tray for it, and put a hand crank on it.. (I think he raised the legs a bit to a better height) I got to turn the handle, and he put shaving edges on everything from kitchen knives to axes with it. Theres also the double crank ...

For my money it would be classier to politely decline the accolade than taking a swing at the one offering it. Thats kinda the point, Bill. I'd take a chest-shot in a heartbeat. Its just personal issues about getting hit in the head.. "friends" simply do not hit friends in the head in my world. I k...

Maeryk, Hmmmmmm... Have it your way. Remember it will only happen once and to say that you would strike your King because of your lack of self control and ability to rationally deal with a tradition, speaks volumes about where you are right now. I think you would be able to control yourself given y...

Geoffrey doesn't need to chasten his body to receive the buffet-- in Western tradition, the buffet is a wicked clout up side your head. It ususally rocks the candidate's world pretty well. (Mine was painful enough to make my eyes water and my nose run. A buddy of mine doesn't remember the 5 minutes...

Ice, most definately. I will sing it to the hills. He's not a "period" armorer per se.. but he does make some of the best (and prettiest) SCA sport armor going. I contacted him via email, and said "how about". He said "Call me" I called him.. he was away on Friday, called me back Saturday. I told hi...

I have seen this topic more than once on different discussion boards: it's not fair that only big 'ol dumb stick jocks get to be king, it's not fair to the knitters or butter-churners, or whatever can't compete in crown. See my point? It's endless man, really. I've been in the SCA for about ten yea...

Maeryk, that would also depend on which period of history you are using for reference. The more armored an opponent the more likely they could withstand the hail of arrows. But few and only the later period nobles would be armored so completely that they would not be bothered by arrows. There are p...

I'm all for honorable combat, but I'd also like to recreate battles where archers are part of the tactics. If I die to an archer before I can swing my weapon, then I'm helping to portray the effect that archers had on battlefield tactics. To me that is a fun experience as well. Have you read the ol...

I dont care one way or the other. It's fun, it adds a bit of realism to some of the battles it is in, it is annoying in others. as long as it is kept to _some_ of the battles, rather than _all_ of the battles, I'm happily willing to deal with it. I agree the rules need some changing.. and the "effec...

I know you were looking for advice on building one.. but I think most of the high end SCA helmets will probably do what you want. The only thing I'm not sure about is the over-3/4 in any direction. You are either going to be looking through a salad strainer.. or have your vision obscured by bars her...

It is not a direct trade, Maeryk, which I perceive you imply by your words, but rather this fellow's sovereign adjured him to go and do this thing as a work to chasten his body to receive the buffet and belt, which is a good thing. I wasnt implying it in this case.. thast why I said I'd need to kno...

and that if Geoffrey Scott doesn't complete his 1500 fights, he'd better bring a doctor's note ... or something to that effect. I would have to know the complete wording before I passed judgement on that. But lets just say, if it was not agreed upon in advance, I think thats one hell of a bar to pu...

Geoffroy of the West fighting 1500 bouts at Pennsic
Anyone else see a trend of one-upsmanship here? Its on sca-today, I believe. He accepted a quest from the K&Q (West) to fight 1500 bouts.. thats like.. 137 bouts a day? something like that? Is this precedent getting to the point where it's dangerous? What is the mindset behind this. ANyone know? Mae...

As FOr the Hinges & Weight... well I Thinks that I WOuld Just make the door out of 1/2 inch T&G as the overall thickness.... Real wood would hold up better then the hallow core crap, SO I Think you can get away with not making it overly thick... as for a lock... a simple hook & Latch seaporately wo...

Another question, concerning the placement of the bottom of the curaise. How do you get it to ride on the waist without it dropping to the hips or riding on the shoulders? It fits closely to the waist, and the fauld actually rides on the hips. At least, thats how the ones that I have seen seem to s...

you could stitch or lace them to the cuisse, even with leather cord to remove them. one suggestion.. I made leather legs (cuisse and greaves) and connected all three together. Unless theres some basic law of armoring I missed, it just doesnt work all that well for the fighting we do. The greave alwa...

Ahhh yes! The flat cap. Thats the Osprey book, right? I know if you get on the germanren costume yahoo group someone there quite probably knows how to make them. I would _think_ carbide wheels.. (like, on a dremel or an angle grinder) would work.. a beverly might work.. but I'm not so familiar with them.. I'm not sure what hardness they will handle. For drilling you probably want the same thing you use for stainless.. the yellow tip drills (I think its tungs...

Broadway, have you thought of using shoelace type ties on one side, and stitched holes on the other? each end of the lace goes through a corresponding hole, then gets tied (bow, or whatever). Any time I've done it: I've started with a fine belt grinder (for rough scaly stuff) then finer and finer scotchbrites then various rouges on a buffing wheel. Its a long and involved process.. but it will get you there. Be careful though.. you can remove thickness rather quickly with the first two. ...
