Yeah, there will be problems with abuse and all that, but aren't there always with new rules?

WE still see problems with rules that have been on the books for 20 years. Some people are just looking for an edge, no matter what.

I think its mostly because the college crowd sees us as dorks. You nailed it. Back when I started we _knew_ we were dorks. .but didnt give a rats ass. Now, I think people who even might THINK about it are afraid their dorkness will show through.. and that is off-putting. The other thing is hte SCA ...

Again, not meant to be a slam on Knights.. meant to be a joke based on what might be old rules from Pennsic that said that Knights could cross between the bridges on their knees, as they were on horse.

Animal et: al.. you dont need to kneel to fight NOW if you are legged on one leg.. you just cant use it. I know people who get legged and simply pick their foot up.. its quite the element of surprise the first time you do it to them.. the rules, so far as I know, do not specifically SAY you must go ...

One of our guys was creamed in the back by our own side as he laid face down at the last Potrero after falling. The guy yelled "get off the field when you are dead!" Of course being face down, Urbano has no idea who did it. I'd LOVE to catch people doing that kind of thing when I'm marshalling, bec...

-- but back to Marshalling -- like there are enough Marshals with enough power to deal with that kind of thing -- in my experience there is not. Thats where the peer pressure (no pun intended) comes in. If someone in your group is doing something stupid, talk to them.. if its someone of a higher le...

Just as a clarification: When I said super-duke vs newbie earlier, that carried no malice towards the duke in question. it was merely a statement of skill levels.. WHAT HAPPENS WITH DFG (DoG?) if the fighter is attempting to rise? I'm assuming the rising fighter can attempt to block the "tag"? I dont think he has to, any more than he has to block on the way down (if its not an intentional fall). you may not strike an opponent when they are in an unsafe positi...

That was my point, Juliana. Maybe its because I'm in the Peoples Republic of the East, where the red tape gets ridiculous at times.. but I think social pressure/education goes much further towards fixing things than changing rules does. Best "dead on the ground" one I ever saw was when good ole Vermin fell through the shield line of (I think?) Calontir.. flat on his face.. Looked up to see a ring of grinning faces and weapons pointed at him and had the cojones to say "So.. do you guys yield?".. (least.. thats how I _think_ he told ...

If its a melee, ESPECIALLY a res battle, I'm gonna leg em and move on anyway.. From what you describe (as the reasons for enacting DFB), it sounds like there is an enforcement of the rules issue with the "cheezeballs". Over legistation with DFB is not IMHO the best option. Instead, enforce the rules. _________________ Come now! Are you saying we should go against years and ye...

(Just a rhino aside) I have a friend who used a face thrust with a spear during a war and the opponent called it "light", so he picked up the power a little bit (not wanting to hurt the guy) and the guy called it light again, the next shot snapped the guys head back.... still light... by this time ...

I dont think there actually _IS_ a rule against it, rather than the vague and quite nebulous "chivalrous". But is not one of the goals of the SCA "researching and recreating the Middle Ages in the present." So why can't it be? Sure, you'll never recreate things exactly as they were simply because we aren't out to truly kill one another, but can't we at least strive to come close with combat as we do wit...

Cant help you on patters, but the majority of this style suit I have seen in woodcuts tend to show the back of the leg unarmored, and in some cases the back unarmored as well. 2) If you charge through an enemy line, you are engaged with the front rank - they can hit you in the back.

SUre about that? I thought it was one shot in passing, and after that its only who you are "facing" or has turned to face _you_.

Theoretically if you are "in weapons support range" of your own troops, and you are facing a unit, then you are engaged WITH THE ENTIRE UNIT. The point behind declared death is for those turkeys who, even though flanked, refuse to turn around and acknowledge your existance. In that case, I would far rather see it used than the inevitable pickaxe from behind with a polearm.

Ogier's suggestion has merit. It's not made to excuse the practices of armourers who attempt to defraud customers, but to assist armourers who are sincerely wanting to get their armour out, and are in over their heads. This is a valuable service. Oh.. dont get me wrong, I think Ogiers idea is great...
