NEAT! Japanese guns! "teppo" I believe?
That was one of the things that pissed me off about "The Last Samurai".. the samurai had guns! They used them! In fact, go watch "7 samurai"!

What/who's not 14th c? Everything I mentioned is documentable to the 14th century...(tho not great swords) Oh.. I know it is. I was just pointing out that Landsknechts (among others) used all of the above AND greatswords, within our period. I was curious about your selection of 14th C when 16th C a...

THAT would be cool! I would love a 14th century battle where bombards, hand-gonnes and the like mixed it up with other weapons (no great swords, though, they're Renaissance weapons). If your bombard or hand gonne failed to fire, you're a casualty. Plate would be proof vs. archery and non-mass weapo...

To give an example to back myself up, say I’m fighting and pull a muscle. I tell my opponent I cannot continue and yield. That’s ok right? Well the rules don’t say I can (at least a the society level), but I would say that the majority of fighters out there would agree that itÃ...

Do you really believe that? From my own experiences practicing and testing them when they first were being considered, yes I do believe that. If you dont baseball swing or pickaxe with them, they hit the same if not lighter than an unpadded of the same size. Theres also _more_ space dispersing the ...

I've been where you are, Maerk. Right after getting out of the army, I was extremely competitive. I figured that I would try to beat the tar out of the other guy and he should be doing the same to me. No whining allowed. Except that I'm not "there" I was just pointing out that when we start to drag...

Not to derail the discussion or anything, but from personal experience, I'd much rather be hit in the head with a 7.5 ft unpadded polearm than an heavily padded 7.5 polearm. In my experience, the extra mass out at the end made a huge difference in the imparted velocity to my helmet. Once you get to...

OTOH, in a "grand melee" scenario, where kingdoms come together and fight with hopefully an even playing field, yeah, I can see where it would take the fun out of it if you were just shooting fish in a barrel. I've used combat archery before only to put it away because I felt that I had too great o...

I certainly suspesct they would add more realism to a line battle.. as it is right now its usually one, maybe two lines of spears.. with shields in between.. 12 footers add the realistic dimension of a third line being able to effectively fight at range.. thats kinda cool. Safety? I wouldnt worry, a...

Clarification: I pike has an axe head on it doesn't it? If so, it is not the same as a spear. Thats what I was initially thinking.. or maybe a spear with a shield hook, but not a striking edge? If your definition (above) is true.. isnt that just a 12 foot polearm? That, to me, would be exceedingly ...

Well, in that case, I'm not much of a spearman.. I'm authorized, and have used em, usually when one is left on the bridge I will grab it and use it with my pole right next to me.. but a 9 footer is about all I'm comfortable with.. and even those I have problems with people grabbing.. (theres a reaso...

Im in the process of peening the edges of my Aluminum heater (boy do the neighbors love THAT) to spread em out a bit, and I will do two layers of leather lengthwise then crossways pieces riveted to the shield to hold it on. That should last quite a while.. (leather doesnt tend to cut through like ti...

l would like to get other opinions about 12 ft. pikes as opposed to 9 ft. ones. I am less interested in the safety aspects as to the other aspects of their use. Hi eric.. not sure what you mean by "pike" Here in the East (at least, last time I really read the rules) we could have 9 foot (or shorter...

But that is not only the rule of the game, it is a fundamental and essential protection for new participants from the excesses, abuses, and priveleges of experienced members. This is not a "rule" it is a suggestion on how to be courtly. Nowhere in the governing documents does it demand that people ...

Cat, my helmets ALONE have weighted 10-12 lbs.. so that, distributed over shoulders and chest, should not be terribly heavy. Its butted maile, and tends to be heavier (I suspect and have heard) than riveted stuff of the same "protection".. but it looks really nice. I know the hauberk I tried on for ...

Hmmm, There are holes in the elbow cop for that, but I figured that to be comfortable you would need a real thin strap or use cord, then it would cut off circulation. I guess if it worked for you though, I'll give it a shot. Did you just use thin leather and a buckle as a strap or did you tie it? M...

The one reproduction I have dealt with, done by a guy I trust implicitly to follow medieval design whenever possible, was a gonners pavise. The center "ridge" was hinged to the two side panels.. to "stand it up" you just folded the side panels slightly to the rear, and it supported itself. It had a ...

The so called "leather gun" wasnt.. it was actually longitudinal brass bars, wrapped carefully with rope THEN covered with a wet, stitched leather covering that shrank as it dried. It worked.. and from the books i have worked well for quite a few shots. Maeryk (cannons melting/breaking/blowing up in...

We went over Doom pretty thoroughly a couple of weeks ago. She's showing no damage whatsoever (other than normal wood wear.. and the wide part of the barrel needs to be soaked and scrubbed) but the chamber is sound. The nice thing about her is that we are always shooting blanks.. far less stress on ...

We have made one, are working on the chassis for a second (premade) naval barrel, and are looking at making several smaller ones. (black powder all.
