Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
Stop me if you have heard this before because I sure have. You know Max' 1 and 2 about the conversation between Maeryk and Gavin probably go back 15 years or better. Yep it runs that long. Audax's original post probably goes back 20 years of hearing it. Yes have heard Sir Olafr's response and used ...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
Maeryk - that is a real bummer. Can you do something like a vote of no confidence for the Seneschal? Depends on the shire, and who is sufficiently pissed off. Needless to say, he wasn't re-elected. but when it's three days before the event, there's not a lit of time to re-org and make it work. but ...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
1. A local group can hold and sponsor an event outside its borders, but cannot hold a Baronial Court at that event, except with permission of the „lending‟ group. Pennsic is exempt from this law. 2. The seneschal of the group sponsoring the event (the requesting group) will send in advance a writte...

Dude, don't apply facts and math.. the bar is NECESSARILY higher every year.. more info is out there, it's "easier" to research, and all that ground has already been gone over by someone else. So it's only right that each new award recipient has to do more than the last to recieve it. (yes...

it's renting space in the castle built on clouds that is at fault. Any time you sell people a fantasy unrealized, you are gonna have issues.

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
Aaron? what do you mean by quality here? I thought we were just scrapping by with what we had and the thing that made it magical were the people all coming together to do fun middle ages stuff. Quantity vs. quality? The VERY best SCA-type events I've been to were in Japan. The quality was astoundin...

Why didn't someone take it to the baronial or regional seneschal, if they wanted to do the demo? If a specific officer doesn't want you to do something, what about their successor? Or their superior? Does the event steward not do the type of event you want? Run the next one. They won't LET you? Kee...

Gentlemen I have no pony in this race. This was a really good discussion, can we get back to it? Thanks, Brennainn but it's part of the meta discussion. Lying? LYING? You are constantly belittling peoples honest gripes with what they have experienced in the SCA as "whiners" or "part of the problem". You are constantly telling them they must change what they percieve to be the problem, but if others don't like they change, THEY a...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
I think judging the health of the SCA solely by how many people put on hardsuit is a bad idea. It might be an indicator of the overall physical health of it though. Perhaps most of those folks increasing in the lighter activities, are just getting too out of shape, unhealthy, and or old to do heavy...

I think judging the health of the SCA solely by how many people put on hardsuit is a bad idea. *Solely*? I think not. I explicitly said it was a proxy measure. It is a means to indicate the shift in the nature of participation. Not conclusive in any way... just an available proxy to indicate direct...

I'll be a heretic here...but we are more than just fighting. What percentage of Pennsic actually fights? I don't think you can sell the Society. Either people are going to get it, or they don't. The key is just to get the word out to people who are going to get it. We used to face the same problems trying to start a rugby team in missouri. We'd put hours and hours into 'selling' rugby to someone at th...

IMO - If Joe Newguy wants to wear generic tunic and pants, with armor that isn't particularly tied to a certain portrayal, we should help him do that as well as he can, while encouraging him to look around, experience different aspect and portrayals in the SCA until they find "their fit"....

I think discussing is the best option. Minimizing/hiding only sets the newb up for a rude awakening. It can be worded well "Rife with medieval intrigue, power struggles, interpersonal squabbles, and truly period backstabbing!".. but to ignore it is a disservice.
