Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
Been around for more than ten years. Got an AoA. Nothing in the last 8 years or so. I get lost in the shuffle between "Good Lord we need new guys, stat!" and "Oh he's a triple peer, let's give him some more stuff!" It's pretty discouraging. Many folks I know who started after I ...

Renee is to, no? Not to the best of my knowledge. The one and only long term full-time employee, but not a member of the corporation. Unsure whether she is actually an officer or not. Meh. Either way, it has little if anything to do with how to promote the SCA to newbs.. which is where the discussi...

Could we work the youtube angle? One minute or less teasers to get them to click on the next teaser which has video from the local group to them? BTW, I'm not replying a lot because Duke Aleric and Max are kicking some butt as far as the ideas. Nothing I can add (except the youtube bit) will help. ...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
I think the trick is to sell the SCA as a place where you can be as period as you want.. without restrictions (outside of regalia rules). That's how I sell it to folks. "Hey, there's NO RESTRICTIONS. you can be whatever level you want. Beggar or lord, or anything in between. You can be full pla...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
Many SCA members are disaffected members of society- fat, unattractive, socially awkward, nerds, etc, etc. These are often also the most visible members of the group, and that detracts from future endeavors. And apparently we still have jocks to remind the nerds that they're fat and unattractive. I...

I see the same problem over and over again: People who are into Medievalish fantasy can go into LARP or boffer and not have to worry about experiencing significant pain during combat and can wear more or less whatever they want. People who want to fight with steel swords, polearms, and armor can go...

Your Grace what do you mean by a bottom end group? SCA members generally aren't in the social register. It is no different from many other hobbyist organizations in this way however, but given that the "cool kids" (I use that term broadly) aren't rushing to be in the SCA it doesn't help u...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
A couple of things. One of the biggest SCA myths is that the rules don't provide a mechanism for kicking people out who are not following the rules. They do. the practical reality is that very rarely do you get people running a function who are prepared to take action to enforce the rules. There ar...

the problem here is that the suggstion that hand drawn missiles defeated armour is silly. its more silly that any contact from a hand drawn missile would be destructive to the extent the sca allows (and it seems the "other games" you mention accept). there is nothing to support this in hi...

Re: Pavilion finial from unexpected source
I'd have to ask; my tent doesn't use finials, has only one pole no ropes and is quite wind tolerant. Also with the forge I'm not usually camped near other tents. 70mph winds are not that uncommon out here though---with no storm associated! As I recall last Estrella we re-set my neighbor's stakes fo...

Re: Pavilion finial from unexpected source
I would be perturbed about those in high winds out here. Hate for a gust to bellow the tent up and fire a solid wooden cannon ball at passer's by. Of course the last 3 events I've been to out here have resulted in broken 2x4 tent poles for other tents due to winds Is that really an issue? do you ro...

Maeryk, I don’t have any specialized production tools. Most of the work is done on a table saw, miter saw, hand drill and router. I did use my mill to cut the mortises, but that could have been done with a drill and a rasp or chisel. Why have I run into so many people in the SCA who have made furni...

I also built a slat bed for my wall tent. (I don't have any pictures and it's disassembled in the trailer covered with snow right now.) I used pallet material to build it (work lets me "clean up" for free) and it makes a rock solid bed. It's pretty similar to asbrand's, but not quite as t...

I would think that any weakening of the fibers would cause your linen tape to be about as strong as the cotton tape. (I've had that stuff break on me-- not fun. You could try bleaching the linen with hydrogen peroxide or Oxyclean-- or else test a small bit in clorox. See what happens. If it's linen...
