They look nice, Jan! What kind of lathe do you have? At this point I'm still on modern equipment. The lathe is an old Craftsman 12" lathe my dad bought in the '80's and I got when he cleaned out his workshop. Those bowls were done with a 5/8" bowl gouge and a scraper, but my lady-wife got...

I don't integrate.. I do a mask with cartriges, and a full flip down face shield. Hearing's not an issue.. as my saw isn't as loud as my radio. I like the flip up shield, because I can stop the tool, flip it up, look closely at what I'm doing, flip it down, and carry on, without removing the whole d...

Not that it matters a lot, but the list was 42, I was the marshal in charge on the day. We had one last minute add. This was a very small list for the West, but our numbers have dropped as of late. Same as many other places in the SCA We have many theories put fourth of why our lists are smaller, i...

Nope, HIPAA doesn't cover medical studies. Just one doctor at the hospital could log in the injuries (and they are legally required to) without the names, etc... Then there is the track record, without the HIPAA issue. NO documentation at all makes me nervous. The local hospital KNOWS we have a hug...

NO documentation at all makes me nervous. The local hospital KNOWS we have a huge event. They have SEEN a bunch of us. We have fleets of ambulances visiting them. But NO documentation on ANY injuries at all? Not even a twisted ankle on a dutchess who danced too hard one night? Weird.... -Aaron HIPA...

We used to make Ccollar gorgets all the time. You will want to trim down the bits under your ears though.. Just duct tape some thick leather over the outside. And fix your helmet so you aren't getting hit in the freakin neck.

I have to wonder if the London pattern wasn't more designed for traveling work (like a farriers forge, small, compact, does EVERYTHING in one place), so has all the bells and whistles one might need, whereas a firmly located smith would have things set up where he needs them, day in day out, for rou...

I love video games. The problem is they are (or tend to be) formulaic. Storyboarded, and set up.. evened and "Faired" for all playing. I think this does a disservice for people who see what we do, and assume it, also, is formulaic, storyboarded, set up, evened and "faired". You w...

I know some people think that is absurd but have you ever thought about why it is REQUIRED that the thrusting tip on a melee weapon MUST have the thrusting tips marked in a contrasting color? It's so your opponent is aware of it. I know, shocking but true. No, it's so you can see if it ISN'T there....

But, I think people like that are the exception, not the rule.

Regarding "compromise" and rule changes, the only changes to CA rules have been in favor of non-ca fighters. I will agree that most of them were driven by increased safety, but at no time (that I am aware of) have non-ca armor or weapon standards been changed to compromise with ca. I know...

I have been using olive oil as a quick coating on the steel portions of my armor to prevent as much oxidization as I am able. Leather needs to be kept supple, but not wet. (You want oil to displace the water that would otherwise fill the cells, this is skin, remember). All of the products Audax lists above will work. The trick is you cannot only do it once. It needs to be routine maintenance. If you leave it out in the rai...

I think that's a question of "recreation", not "re-creation". The SCA is not just re-creation. And there's nothing wrong with that, it's just a different game. Ah, but it is supposed to be. From scademo.com: "What is the SCA? The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an...

Is there any big difference to the technique when edging an aluminum shield?
