If you don't know who Mac is, most peopel consider him to be "the best." His advice to start with something simple and learn the technique first would be good to heed.

Good luck!

you might look into getting an expansion wheel for your bench grinder. They work quite well too, just make sure you get the right sized bushing.

Here are some examples: http://www.dadsrockshop.com/sc_products.html

they will totally work well for you!

The price isn;t cheap, but seems spretty reasonable for a quality machine. I have one of these. It is a sweet machine. B...

Next I'm making a black wool one with mail peeking out around the bottom. Could you scan it and post it to the patterns...

"polishing" can also be helpful at different stages to see how consistent your hammering has been. "polish" to see low spots and divets more easily.

Personally, my issues with Madu are much more akin to the reasoning that professional baseball uses wooden bats- it significantly alters the game. Scores in college baseball are often things like 21-14 or 15-10, not the 7-4 or 3-1 of professional ball. Years ago the so called "spaghetti racket&...

If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard it called unrealistic or gaming the rules, I would be standing next to a trout stream instead of sitting behind a computer. So let's make a list of other things in SCA combat which are unrealistic and game the rules. ...

The biggest problem with them is calibration. Thrusts are an odd beast in the SCA. Everyone complains about face thrusts being too hard, but at the same time, considering the armor standard, probably takes body and leg thrusts from one handed weapons way too lightly, and probably because most of us ...

Good Gentles all, Such a subject for my first post here. Well let me say that I believe the two fighters were engaged under the melee rules at Gulf War and as such it was a legal blow. Only thrusts to the back of the head are not allowed per the rules. I must ask, however, if I am the only one conc...

He moved his head out of the way so fast that his face got shmushed up against the bars as he was dodging. It took a little bit of time for the helmet to catch up to his do...

I have gold plated lamellar. It cost about 2-3 bucks a plate including stamping and plating. It is probably 2-3 times that much now, and I only needed about 200 plates.

If I had thought about it I would have put resist on the backs of the plates to cut down on cost.

Cet's finish, and shaping looks more right than Ironmonger's. I find that Ironmonger has a bit more "slop" than Cet, such as in the straightnenn of his lines, or where the point is located.

I recommend Cet.

YMMV.

I recommend using nickel bronze instead. In a relatively thin strip, it can have "spring-y" properties like you are looking for and is pretty when it shines up as well.

I think McMaster carries it as well.

There is no excuse for a ballista bolt hitting a spear tip taking out a fighter. That is just stupidity.

IIRC doesn't the rule say hit the person anyway, not the weapon?

It all depends on how often you want to replace your gear. You can cut weight/ga a lot if you don't mind having to replace your armor more often than not. Also, something like 20 ga spring steel properly hardened and tempered with give you a performance level superior to much thicker mild or stainle...

depending on where the sword and hilt are there are only so many shots that any person can throw.

Likewise, depending on where their feet, hips, etc are, there are only so many ways power can be generated.

It just takes a lot of time and practice to see them.
