We can use an analogy here that is very apt. When I was a tennis player, my serve was well over 110 miles per hour. For most of my matches, all I would have to do was serve to win. Eventually though, I got to be good enough that I played at a level where guys could hit it back. So I worked on it mor...

A couple of points to consider- When most of the Great fighters of today were up and coming, not only was there a great divide between the really good fighters and everyone else, but thrusting tips looked like nerf footballs stuck on the end of a stick. They were ungainly as hell, and did not really...

Re: So If you could plan the battles
Lucan, I know this won't fly, but... I would have one day full of battles between the East and Middle to appease the economic contracts that bind Pennsic together, fulfilling the War between the East and Middle aspects. Then once that was done, the 2 Kingdoms could each sponsor other battles and day...

If it wasn't for the combat of the thirty, the historical combat series, the other themed battles and pas like the Crusader battle, Samurai War, and the fact that as a vassal of a crown I must go if possible I'd stop going to Pennsic and try something new. Being in the same position you are, I woul...

Part of that cost issue is one that hsa grown because of organizations like the SCA. Supply and demand force the cost of SCA equipment to be low 1) because until a few years ago people could not afford it, and 2) until recently there was little high end market which would give anyone a reason to cha...

The pick-up fighting has just started to go away as responsibilities in camps and to households has grown. Years ago, we'd just show up with some tents, and go fight all day. Now, you have to get back, make sure the shower is working right, cook for everyone, whatever it might be. Also, as the age o...

Let's put this all in context for a second, ok? SCA combat is a sport that mimics medieval fighting to a greater or lesser degree. It has a rule set that allows us to both be safe and so that we can decide who a victor is- not necessarily the superior fighter. Various Kingdoms have different sub set...

I recieved my Roucsh Rally elbow pads in the mail this weekend. I am a little concerned with just how protective they will be (and how constrictive they feel - tho any sorta modern pad feels restrictive to me now...). I'm going to try them out at practice, assuming they fit under my gambeson and gi...

THANK YOU!!! Thank you very very much! I didn't think you could still get the old style and I like them a lot better. Just curious, what do you like better about them? Hi Doug, I've been thinking about getting a pair to go under a set of sabatons I am working on, and I worry about the comfort of th...

I've used both Bondo and resin for relief work on a shield. I've also carved right into wood, but that is a different story. Gaston used the same techniques (but much better than I do) in making the shield on the left hand side in this picture. http://www.globaleffects.com/B_pages/03_ArmsArmor/Armor...

I just had a talk about this sort of thing with a Master at Arms at our local practice this last week. He was complaining about the attitude of new fighters who were ocming and who only wanted to win. They were all sportsmen, and when he had joined it was about the ideals. I replied in so many words...

Sean makes a number of good points about Chicago. The city is oppressive in its size and physical attributes, and makes it difficult in finding good sites, and also in getting to them (not to mention parking once you are there). The political landscape of Chicago also makes it difficult. They are st...

These work great are low profile and fit under wraps, boots or anything.
I use set under my period boots in conjunction with gamboissed cuisses and "soupcan" knees.

Serious lack of competition and competitive spirit in this Kingdom. I'm sorry to hear you feel this way (not to say I think you're wrong). I would personally relish having more high-end fighters like yourself kick my ass on a regular basis and force me to a higher level, and I believe many of the o...

I had considered the fiberglass because it gives a canvas like texture to paint on, and I thought it would be less prone to ripping than the canvas. I am trying to get away from shields with edges, the look just doesn't work for me anymore, so I am experimenting with different ideas for that. Alaric

shield construction idea
I have re-thought my edgeless shield design. In my ongoing quest to make a shield that looks "right" and will last I have a new idea- 1) using an aluminum core, build up the edge using this shield edging: m 2) evel out the face of the aluminum and edging using Bondo creating one unified surface. 2a)...
