How about we try and make Pennsic more medieval- Have the first day be "The War" between the East and Middle. The rest of the days could be consumed by wars, battles and tournaments sponsored not just by the various Kingdoms, but also by households, and various SCA Royalty- i.e. Dukes, Cou...

I would bet that it's an Inman.

I would bet that the top is a 12 ga spun dome. His construction was pretty good overall as I recall.

The bar work certainly looks like his, and the brass work looks like stuff Athena used to do.

We can use an analogy here that is very apt. When I was a tennis player, my serve was well over 110 miles per hour. For most of my matches, all I would have to do was serve to win. Eventually though, I got to be good enough that I played at a level where guys could hit it back. So I worked on it mor...

Really? If I didn't do this, I don't know if I would get half my thrusts to work. It's just a matter of practicing and figuring out where the momentum shift needs to take place.

It's on the 26th?

I never won that one. Only got to fight in it once though, and that was when Tomiki made us all fight with great weapons after the 5th round. I hated that. Still did ok though.

Good big tournament.

A couple of points to consider- When most of the Great fighters of today were up and coming, not only was there a great divide between the really good fighters and everyone else, but thrusting tips looked like nerf footballs stuck on the end of a stick. They were ungainly as hell, and did not really...

Why not straight wrap it? Unless you are using the tape to "hold together" the rattan filaments themselves, something I usually just use strapping tape for, then it should not really matter. The thickness of the tape should help to protect and preserve the sword somewhat in any case. g-

You can do the same with just the duct tape, it works just as well, and I find that the stickiness of the duct tape holds a little better than the adhesive on the strapping tape for the same purpose.

Re: So If you could plan the battles

Lucan, I know this won't fly, but... I would have one day full of battles between the East and Middle to appease the economic contracts that bind Pennsic together, fulfilling the War between the East and Middle aspects. Then once that was done, the 2 Kingdoms could each sponsor other battles and day...

If it wasn't for the combat of the thirty, the historical combat series, the other themed battles and pas like the Crusader battle, Samurai War, and the fact that as a vassal of a crown I must go if possible I'd stop going to Pennsic and try something new. Part of that cost issue is one that hsa grown because of organizations like the SCA. Supply and demand force the cost of SCA equipment to be low 1) because until a few years ago people could not afford it, and 2) until recently there was little high end market which would give anyone a reason to cha...

weld aluminum tubing onto the edges of an aluminum shield.

That will hold the best and looks the best, especially after you cover teh shile with canvas or similar.

It is also the hardest to do.

The pick-up fighting has just started to go away as responsibilities in camps and to households has grown. Years ago, we'd just show up with some tents, and go fight all day. Now, you have to get back, make sure the shower is working right, cook for everyone, whatever it might be. Also, as the age o...

Let's put this all in context for a second, ok? SCA combat is a sport that mimics medieval fighting to a greater or lesser degree. It has a rule set that allows us to both be safe and so that we can decide who a victor is- not necessarily the superior fighter. Various Kingdoms have different sub set...

Just speaking to the fighting aspects of Pennsic, I do not think that it is as fun as it used to be. The type of fighting going on at Pennsic has significantly changed, and the number and quality of the "pick ups" has dropped significantly. I recall 15 years ago when I could go up to the b...

I had considered the fiberglass because it gives a canvas like texture to paint on, and I thought it would be less prone to ripping than the canvas. I am trying to get away from shields with edges, the look just doesn't work for me anymore, so I am experimenting with different ideas for that. Alaric

I have re-thought my edgeless shield design. In my ongoing quest to make a shield that looks "right" and will last I have a new idea- 1) using an aluminum core, build up the edge using this shield edging: m 2) evel out the face of the aluminum and edging using Bondo creating one unified surface. 2a)...
