Thanks for the advise folks. Well, I was aiming for some kind of 14th century, man at arms. I'm not quite sure of the region yet, be it German, French, or English. I'm probably going to go with steel, but I'm not sure. Would the style with more lames be accurate? There are plenty of pics from this ...

Perhaps when combat archery is in play, combatents should carry numerous flags or ribbons, removing one each time a lethal bowshot is delievered. I would rate the number of flags according to what your presumed level of armor is. You could start with 3 for maille, and go up to 5 or 6 for cap-a-pie ...

To have a pretty good chance at winning, you should do the following: Get your conditioning up by doing exercises that will simulate the length and exertion of your average fight- such as sprinting short distances, not long distance running. Do your pell and slow work. 500-1000 blows per day that yo...

Devils in the details George. I noticed you said "all....used..." implying that you have done repairs right? How thick are your plates as well? Alaric: By definition, though, those groups you define aren't a majority. "Higher end heavy fighters" not liking CA shouldn't impact the majority of heavy fighters, and that's what's going to happen. I have to agree with Logan. Most of the higher end heavy fighters I've talked with do not care for the imbalances and other issues that CA brings to the field. This is not to say that they don't all participate, as Knight's most of them will perform their duty and be on the field, even though they a...

Welcome to the conundrum that is hand protection for fighting in the SCA, and why so many people who otherwise have rather accurate kits eventually make the choice to simply use basket hilts. The average fighter doesn't care what the scenario for a battle is, or if there is CA in it or not.

The fight over CA really is between the small group who like it, and the people who don't, most people are probably pretty apathetic to it.

Fine, I will concede that CA is a relatively recent addition to SCA combat. Maybe this will help sum up why some people don't like CA: The SCA is a warrior culture. Fighters fight, and so much of what we do is centered around supporting and admiring this fact. CA'ers, for the most part, participate in the fighting, but don't fight. Their perceived purpose and use on the fiel...

well their armor does not really look to be all that cheap, certainly not for what you are getting.

and the lines just aren't right. They are ok on some things but not others.

If your friend intends on fighting in this gear, I think he or she would find better gear elsewhere.

Aluminum lamellar, gamboissed cuisses with "soupcan" knees- hidden or not hittden, and leather vambraces with and metal elbows (hidden under a garment).

With the correct garments, totally period, totally protective, great look, and great mobility.

Euric,

Roman soldiers wore a scarf to prevent chafing around the neck and shoulders. A scarf would cover any gorget, including a plastic one, well, and add a bit of period appearance to any early type kit.
