I don't fight in holmgang style tournies, or any other tourney where the object is to shove your opponent out of a ring. I don't find thosse fun at all, because they rarely have anything to do with skill, and are all about size. I like pas style tournies, and bear pit (when there are enough pits for...

I think that you also need to add in hand/wrist strength, and mass of arm and body into the equation, as the ability to transfer that force need to be added intothe discussion- not to mention the density and flex of the stick itself. I think that we all know that a good new stick will "hit harder" t...

Lutr is certainly hot right now! I think we need to define a difference between hot right now and just plain damn good. Usually a guy who is hot has found a shot that is working, or is doing something differently from what everyone else is, and it is working really well for them right now. Then the ...

JP, I have never heard that Brion actually won the tournament by his own hand. Maybe all I ever heard was Caidan scuttlebutt, but his/your version is totally different from the version from what I heard. In fact what I was told was that in the three way final that Brion had already lost his fights a...

If someone enters Crown, and is blatantly cheating, it is within the Crown's right to throw them out on the spot (actually they can throw anyone out for anything they like pretty much). The real problem arises when a really skilled fighter uses a "get out of jail free card," and shucks off one good ...

I fail to see the problem of choosing how we will calibrate in our own Kingdoms, provided we are willing to adjust to other Kingdom's standards when we travel. And, by and large, those Meridians who do travel outside the borders (admittedly few) don't seem to have a problem with that. Nor do I see ...

Re: Combat Archery
I am new to this site and wanted to find out from others through out the Kingdoms of their standards. I would like some input about Box Tourneys .. Weapons against Weapons, what is and what isn't allowed, who determines what is fair? And then, lets talk about battle stratagies for the Heavy Archer ...

Mac, I guess we will have to disagree on who gets to choose our rulers. Although you don't have problems with other people choosing sovereigns, I do, as do many other people. There is already enough political claptrap in the SCA, and too many claims of cheating and the like to have to throw that int...

They produce subjective winners, not clear winners (yes sometimes the skill of a master might be clearly higher than that of a beginner, but we are speaking in generalities). There are ways of reducing subjectivity, but arts contests, specifically by having a judged winner, place the choice of a vict...

Mac, I believe the nullified Crown that you referred to was fought in An Tir. The issues with it are that it takes the winning of Crown out of the hands of the individual, and places it onto less responsible heads. Where each of the "finalists" may be virtuous, their "followers" may not be. I see th...

Gregoire, Let me first say that I am sorry for the loss of your friend. I am goign to take this opportunity to jump on a soapbox for a moment though- The SCA should seriously begin to consider prevention as a course of action. The average member of the SCA is getting older, and if visual evidence is...

a King knighted someone primarily for their fencing ability, not their heavy weapons skill? Also, do you have any other ideas on a peerage for fencing, and on the White Scarves and Treaty? I have my own personal thoughts one, and on the White Scarves, but I will hold them for later. My lady and I we...

Guy, Every time fighter practice has been cancelled because fighters didn't show up, it is because they were off doing something else they thought was more fun. Fighting in Chicago has been difficult, and not fun for many years (from what I have been told). As such, fighters (and fighting interested...

The SCA is turning into a world of minorities outweighing the fighters and fighter support. An analogous situation is that there are more caucasians in the United States than any other group, but no one is in the majority (over 50%) anymore. Guy, I am sorry to say that I believe you are wrong. In th...

David, I don't think that the number of people attending each class was great, but I thin kthat the numebr of clases as a whole, as well as the number of arts and non-heavy fighting actvities at Pennsic are indicative of a major turn in what happens there as a microcosm of SCA activity as a whole. T...

David, The problem, as I see it, is that there is no end to interest groups in the SCA, and they all feel like they should get some attention. Try being King in Caid and setting a schedule to deal with all their nincompoopery. It's a pain. There does come a point at which you have to say, "no, I rea...

Baby...bathwater...baby....bathwater. KWH is, undeniably, badly out of date. So update it. OK I disagree. I know Artos and he has a wicked sense of humor. Not on the same level as Duke Kane Redfeather but close One of my favorite people in the SCA to hang around for this reason. He also has one of the best kits on the field. Nuff on that. Artos made a joke, Ulrich, myself and probably 90...
