Meridian combat conventions are to the SCA what the designated hitter rule is to baseball- sure they work in context, and the game looks the same, but there is something fundamentally different about it. Look over the last few years worth of discussion here about armor, safety, and SCA fighting in g...

The padded cuisse by itself isn't all that bad. Like Iain said, though, it isn't fun getting smacked in the same spot over and over through them. I had light leg armor before, so I didn't really see much of a mobility increase from the gamboissed cuisses. Then again, I was always known for being abl...

Sure Targes did make an appearance, but you would/should limit their use to the appropriate and very limited personae. I do not believe that small side mounted circular shields were in general use for any but a very limited number of groups in period. Since they see only >extremely< limited use in p...

How occasional? Once a week at practice, or once a year in the finals of a tournament? I've been fighting in gamboissed cuisses for about 6 months, and I seem to be doing all right. Then again, I don't get hit as much as some people do. My advice is to sew a pocket to the inside of the gamboissed cu...

Will someone please explain the rational behind starting with a small side mounted round shield?

Why start someone off with a form that a) they will generally never use again, b) it combines the worst aspects of all forms, and c) isn't really period for anyone?

Gaston, Where I think that there are a lot of reasons why Trimarians have not come back to Pennsic for a long time (btw it was great to see you and Baldar there this year, you all made a great showing), I think that the reasons for their not showing up any longer might be a little different from the...

Which Kingdoms fall outside of the realm of normal SCA fighting though? I certainly think that there are local trends that are very odd- the no moving on the knees in Ansteorra, the lightness of the average shot in Meridies/Glenn Abhann, the shielding of the dead's eyes in Caid. But what constitutes...

Logan, It happened to me in that Heroic Champions Bridge thing at Pennsic 33. My feet were caught,a nd I was getting shoved from both front and back, and getting slammed by weapons because I couldn't go down. You could always adopt a fighting "persona" and wear armor that is appropriate for a shield that you feel you would like to or feel comfortable using.

Try to match your shield to your armor. Certain shields are appropriate to certain armors and others are not, i.e. Vikings don't carry heaters.

Consider your overall look, and have some fun with that as well, but don't just use a shield for that shield shape's sake.

I don't mind the groups who are at least consistent in what they take, and what they expect their opponent's to take (although I think there is too much talking and blow calling in Meridies among the lower ranked fighters), but what really ticks me off are the groups who take like tanks, and then sta...

I agree 100% with your statement. But, let me ask you this. If the fighter receiving the blow does have his armour up to minimums or even greater minimums and is padded/strapped sufficiently and the shot coming in is STILL painfull enough to weaken the knees, would that be considered excessive forc...

What is the objective of swinging with such high callibration or low callibration? Why do kingdoms make those choices? Kingdoms don't make those choices, fighters do. Fighting at higher levels, you realize that you might only get 1 chance to hit your opponent during the course of any given fight, a...

Spring Steel at Pennsic

After having worn a spring steel rig for most of Pennsic, I have to say that I give a thumbs down to the experience. Although I give the suit high marks in the wearing and performance areas, I have to say that the maintenance levels are so far in the negatives for me that they far outweigh the posit...

Don't discount the fact that you might be throwing your shots incorrectly. Improper form on the wrap will quickly lead to tennis elbow.
