Mike, Thanks for putting the order together, etc. I appreciate it. I was just checking over the posts again, and noticed that you might have just picked up the order today? Is that so? Or even just in the last few days. Like you I am in school full time, but I live here in Chicago. I could have assi...

Locally, I would have to say Fern is the most active Knight. The other 4 or five I can think f off the top of my head are either busy with work, school and rebulding a home, retired, or injured. It's winter. It is hard to want to get out and do anything outside of home in the winter, especially when...

Also, I would be honored to cross swords with anyone who would share the field with me on this day, and though my field accoutrement may not yet be...

Hey Matt- A couple of nights before Fall Atlantian Crown in 1997, I called my Knight and asked him for advice for Crown. Gregory, The average fighters outnumber the peers of the SCA significantly. The number of archers is also relatively small when compared to the total number of fighters. The archers, however, target (almost exclusively it seems) the "upper class" fighters. As far as the numbers go here is the equati...

I can see your point of view. But, what about the other side of the coin? What about the guys who love shooting bows in combat archery, who would have to stop having their fun in order to make the guys they shoot happy? It's the same as gettin' smacked in the face by a spear, as far as I can see. Y...

Some aspects of SCA fighting have been added in the last few years (especially at Pennsic), and have significantly altered the manner in which battles are fought. From my vantage ...

No but shafted arrows are vey unsafe and go against the spirit of the rules. They make our combat markedly unsafe for participants, marshals, and the audience.

Some people take more than a dim view on the use of shafted arrows, and the paintball tactics used by CA'ers in the SCA

Maelgwyn, It sounds like what you are saying, essentially, is that a title that is open to everyone who has an AoA has been appropriated for the White Scarves in your Kingdom- effectively giving a group that does not get a "title" when they get an award, a special "title" for getting an award. More ...

I understand about the breaches of real life protocol regarding the use of titles in the SCA. How would someone who has an AoA and is not a White Scarf get treated if they started using the title Don in Ansteorra or other Kingdoms where Don usually implies a White Scarfer (wow I almost wrote Don)? in either case Byzantines did not wear bazubands. From moost of the material extant, it would appear that the best course of action is to hide armor under a shirt. Everyone in the SCA is assumed to be nobility, so we should all hold ourselves to a high and honorable standard. Chef (and everyone else), I think (my limited research) shield size also varies as per region, with larger, longer shields persisting in Eastern Europe (Byzantium, Bulgaria, Romania, etc) for a much longer period of time. Do you have any info that might refute or corroborate the above? Alaric

Gregory,

A Varangian rig would be quite acceptable in the SCA. On the other hand, I think you will find the 14th century rig to be the most acceptable.

Good luck in the creation of all your armor.
