Your Grace, Well I should clarify one point on the limb thing... I would probably only make that kind of offer to someone I felt was my equal, and by giving up my advantage I only brought the fight back to an equal status. I would never make the same gesture to a Duke (if I was lucky enough to wing...

The squire's tourney usually has over 100 participants and many vieweres. It is also usually run in a "Speed Tourney" Fashion which usually doesn't allow for much time at all between rounds, certainly not enough time to run off to another whole tourney area. I have also noticed in the past that the ...

re-designed Churburg
Gruber and I wanted to get some advance pics of our latest breastplate up. It is made from hardened 1050 Spring steel. I have not yet put the stop rib or straps on it, but I think the shape turned out very nicely.

buy some swords, and save yourself some time, effort, and a lot of wasted tools. I regularly work with 18 ga spring steel, and I can't tell you how much trouble you are going to havce working with 1/4" and no tools. a sheet of 18ga spring steel costs me like $30-$40 when I buy it in bulk. Finding a ...

DKFB is against the basics ideals of what we are doing on the field in the SCA. Since we are playing a game on the field, and not really fighting unto death, there is an unwritten code of fighting to the last man. Where in real life, many of us might be captured, surrender, run away, or be ransomed,...

Juliana, Logan had the through right in his explanation, but I will clarify... "Engaging" your opponent allows them a chance to defend themselves. "DFB" seems like sneaking up on someone and stabbing them in the back. In my Crown final against Drogo, he had every opportunity to defend himself, and l...

one of the main problems with recruitment is that at demos, etc, it always seems like the biggest dork possile is the person who walks over and starts talking to people about the SCA. It bothers me a lot, because while I am out on the field fighting, I am watching many of the people around, and they...

The basic difference between Declared Death on the Ground, and Declared Death from Behind is that the combattant is (Generally) engaged with their opponent in the Death on the Ground situation, but is stabbed in the back in the other. One seems to be a courteous end to a struggle enjoined by engaged...

My experience with DFB is that the better fighters on the west coast simply don't use it even when they are able to. It promotes dishonorable combat, so many of the West Coast Knights won't even consider using it. It's a bad rule, and like Vitus, I am against it. Death on the Ground, however, should...

Hrogn, I see you are from An Tir. I have to tell you, that worst experience I have ever had with CA was at an An Tir event- An Tir/West War of last year. The number of archers, and the scenarios with them were utterly not fun, and completely imbalanced. The Westies and I couldn't even come out of re...

Shafted arrows can be dangerous for several reasons- 1) they fly farther and faster, so a misplaced shot can injure a non armored combattant or audience member much more easily. 2) a broken shaft, or one with a "bad" head or ABD can kill someone. Yes, I am uncomfortable with the construction of shaf...

Matt, If you are going to be at Pennsic, I'll give you a hand with wraps there. I have an effective and simple method of teaching a wrap that doesn't damage your arm. Until then, think of wraps this way, they aren't really a "big swing around things," they are really just more of a turning over of t...

Although I hate CA, and my choice would be to have it eliminated from the CA- this is probably not going to happen. 1) We need to ban shafted arrows, they are unsafe- for fighters, non-fighting participants, and the audience. Requiring all Heavy participants to change their armor in order to make th...

Hushgirl, Bows cost much less than the average amount of money and time that I spend on my fighting equipment every year. On average, I spend over $200 a year on rattan. Plus probably another $50 on tape to make those swords usable. I also spend around $20 on shield edging, $20 on paint and canvas, ...

Angus, I disagree about CA making more people have fun on the field. Total Number of people having fun fighting without CA>Total number of people fighting and having fun with CA, because the number of people who dislike CA is greater than the number of CA participants. T-Bob and Hushgirl, You aren't in my situation. You aren't the targets of hundred of arrows at wars. I have been shot at over 100 times in a day. I have counted. You can only block two or three arrows at a time for a while before one gets you. Even when we PLAN for and PROTECT against CA, the imbala...

Geoffroi, I guess you are just better than I am. Or maybe far fewer arrows get shot at you, because you can only knock so many arrows out of the air before they overwhelm you with sheer numbers. Maybe you were at last An Tir West War? If not ask Uther, Alden, Merlin about the crappiness with the arr...

Hushgirl: Sorry it has taken me a while to answer your question. I am in the middle of moving, but let me take a moment now. The reason that the organizers of a war wouldn't tell the archers which Battle the "charge" would take place in is that if the Archers knew, they would all sit down and not pl...

The problem isn't with newbies. I'd say Gruber- it is fun watching him progress very quickly into the world of real armoring as opposed to the metal banging he was doing before Me and Ugo follow a close second- me because my armoring pays my bills and Ugo cause he makes really cool stuff, then shows me how he did it. There are a w...
