Re: Future of SCA fighting
Instead, the SCA should admit that their policies are simply not working at anything besides maintaining a tiny fringe group and CHANGE their policies to increase participation and give veterans SOME motivation to help newbs more. Probably every male on the planet has fought with play swords as a k...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
2 points- 1. That calibration standard has been pretty well researched. Don Tivar of Ansteorra did some expirementing a while back with a hog carcass and a linen shirt. It takes only 3 pounds of pressure to break through the shirt and skin, and after that the force needed is almost zero. For compar...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Both people there with strawberry leaves, me and Duke Stephen, both tried to follow up. Since we are both out of Kingdom Dukes, we were stonewalled a bit. Also, the Rapier guys immediately tried to turn our issues into "we had complaints about both of you hitting too hard and not taking light e...

Re: A Question of Grace
I'm not sure if it's out there, or if it was even recorded but one of the best fights I ever saw was Duke Alaric (possibly then "just" Sir Alaric) Vs. Elvis of Memphis. Oh Lyondemere! It was just Lord Alaric. I got three entries in that tourney because I didn't have a Grant of Arms (Lord ...

Re: A Question of Grace
Finnacan, I wasn't saying you did it. I've run into the same situation, and I don't get it. In Caid, it was "regular practice" amongst a group of fighters to give up and match anything they took because they saw it as unfair. I didn't get it, especially those who said it was unfair when I ...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
FWIW, I never said my bad experiences were in Atlantia. In fact, most Atlantian fencers I have dealt with have been ok. One of the poor experiences I had was virtually the same as that Cedric the tall mentioned, and guess what- it was in EXACTLY THE SAME PART OF THE COUNTRY. My former student Camero...

Re: A Question of Grace
I am unsure why anyone would see the fight as "unfair" when someone is legged. Two men enter, it's as "fair" a fight as it can be when the fight starts. Everything else that happens is stuff that occurs in the course of the fight. If someone drops their sword you give it back. If...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Actually, part of the issue is that the float goes one way and not the other. Most heavies don't care if a new person or a "crossover" hits them in an armored spot like their hands, or their knee. They just mention it, and point it out if it happens again. If you were to grab my weapon, I'...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
As for having to help the guy off the field, well, uh, good form. That'll show him. You can't help it with the badassery, can you? It just sort of spills out while you type. Just to be clear, I don't mind, just find it fascinating. As for your concerns about safety, I believe they should be welcome...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Based on ten years of very active fencing participation, I'm pretty sure that your experiences are not the norm. I can assure you that it has been my regular experience in the 20 odd years I have been around fencing, including since it was an experimental form in Atlantia called SWASH (late 80's). ...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
So it is what many have long suspected. The primary motive behind those that deride steel play? It is simply the love of bashing and wrapping, snapping and banging and disregarding everything else as inferior, weaker, less manly, wimpy, what have you... with knighthood to add weight to the sense of...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
I've been authorized in rapier for just a little over 3 years in Atlantia. When I've asked the senior fencers about calibration/force levels, the answer I've always heard is that the opponents in a bout negotiate the force levels. If two people agree to play hard, that's fine. If one person wants t...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
You knowing or feeling that you are in control is different from other people, especially those not used to seeing a controlled devastating attack, knowing the difference. The divide that exists in heavy fighting, with some people playing a very hard game, and others wanting to play light, also exis...

Re: SCA Combat Training: Flat Snap, foot position
The form, style or whatever that someone uses to get there is up to them. There are some basics that seem to help and promise the good transfer of power. However, some guys, like Count Kane, could hold their hand in front of themselves, and just whack you with a good shot. No body movement, no nothi...

I had already "waivered in" and just found it odd that I had to stop fighting, and literally hunt down an MoL and sign in on their list.

Re: To waiver or not to waiver?
If I show up late at an event (like I usually do), and just want to join in for the pickups after the tourney has ended, do I need to sign in with the MoL? Once I've signed my waiver at Troll, do I need to sign another waiver at the MoL table? Especially if I am not participating in the tournament, ...

Re: "Bye" Fights
Not to mention that in a contact sport there is RISK involved with every play. When I am focused on something else, like winning Crown, giving my all and potentially injuring myself in a fight that doesn't affect my ability to progress myself and my consort through the tournament doesn't make sense....

Re: "Bye" Fights
I don't care about them, because after years of other sports experience, this is the ONLY one in which I have ever been asked to "play out" a bye. To my head it is not something that matters. To Diglach's point, two things: in some regions it is not part of the culture (Southern Atlantia),...

Re: "Bye" Fights
Here's what I'm missing... 1) Policies, cultures and traditions are dictated by (or heavily influenced by) the monarch 2) Monarchs are chosen by competition 3) Those best at the competition seem to dislike bye fights 4) Bye fights are part of policy, culture of tradition It seems to me that a well ...

You know, I actually don't miss what feasts have become- show off events for some laurel's apprentice. Now that I a...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Here is an honest question that I am sure some will fume at me for but why have those so interested in C&T and Rapier and little interest in the sport that dictates our structure not started their own group? One that has it's own structure and focus on that as the main activity which could allo...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Duke Alaric, regarding C&T and rapier in Atlantia, did you get to talk to Sir Roland? He's a White Scarf as well as a knight, he plays C&T, and he's a C&T marshal. Also, Giacomo, our Kingdom Rapier Marshal, plays heavy combat and C&T as well as rapier. Giacomo enjoys playing hard in...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
Since I know little to nothing about C&T, what is stopping it from becoming full contact rebated steel? The rules set, development path, and institutional inertia. As it has been set up as coming from Rapier, it is very much entwined currently with the minimal touch, control critical mindset of...

You don't have to be at 10K hours to be a Crown Winner, because not every guy who wins a Crown is an interstellar master, they are simply the guy who was best that day. If you want to be able to compete at the top level, however, you do need a certain level of dedication and practice to be one of th...

Cost of being the best top end heavy for one year with an assumed Coronet win at the end: 1 year of training- Equipment: $800 2 Practices a week (One of which is in Sacramento): $2480 8 Royal Tournaments: $960 4 Wars:...
