Re: Modern regional appearance (SCA)
The armorer makes a bigger difference than you might think to appearance. We used to be able to sit on the field at Pennsic and tell where people were from by the type of armor they were wearing- Atlantian's didn't just wear Bascinet, they were Eldrid Bascinets, Trimarians didn't just wear aluminum ...

Re: 7 1/2 foot Polearm vs 6 foot Great Sword
I would say that in your hands the Pole Arm is the better choice, and that in the unnamed brother Knight's (Gregor?) hands, that the 6ft great sword is the better choice For instance, I would be far better off with the sword than the polearm, I just don't get them. There are a lot of variables invol...

Re: All martial discipline numbers
I wonder what sort of concern I should have about some of the Kingdoms that have smaller numbers of authorized fighters, such as Ealdormere (and that number for Caid and Atenveldt seem low). There are tournaments in some of the other Kingdoms where there are more fighters entered than there are tota...

Re: Modern regional appearance (SCA)
I wrote a pretty substantial paper on this a few years back. What I noted was that there are two or three keys to various areas and they types of armor worn and styles fought: 1) Who is (are) the current top dog(s)? 2) Who are the local armorers? 3) What's the weather like? 4) Local fighting values ...

Keep in mind too, that there is a big difference between letting someone hit you the way that you did, and getting hit in a fight.

Re: Legal fist weapons?
Unless you can literally knock me out through my helmet with your fists, it wouldn't matter anyway, and I simply wouldn't take your shots as "good". We wear armor for a reason- it works. It works against sharp weapons and it works against blunt weapons. It certainly works against fists. An...

Re: Need a few basket hilts
The Zen Warrior ones are knock offs, the only person who makes Bedford hilts is Michael of Bedford. Having used both, there is a difference. The real Bedford ones are a little deeper and balance a little better (ok a lot better) on the swords. The Zen ones can be tweaked for a better fit though. Kee...

Re: Aggressive/rude marshals
Trust me, being King, or working with one who understands the rules, procedures, etc totally changes the "food chain" and matters of "legality." Legality, unfortunately, often comes down to "interpretation" and within a Kingdom, a King's word is 99% of the time going to...

Re: Aggressive/rude marshals
Omarad, I believe that your experience might be different from my own. From Kingdom to Kingdom there are variations. Consider that in Caid, the King's word is law, and that tradition is enforceable. In this case, (at least in Caid) the King or Queen can make rules (as I recall, I believe that the Ki...

Re: Aggressive/rude marshals
Let me see, one fighter spoke up and told the marshal "we're safe, and we're fine." That means "we're not moving and you don't know what you're talking about." That doesn't mean "calm down we're moving." So if you don't want the marshal to get mad at you, don't defy th...

That doesn't make sense, especially given that I just heard that the cast aluminum menpos were now made "legal." A regular menpo (or facemask of any sort) shouldn't be any different that the front of a great helm, it's a sheet of metal, but just has a little more shape. So why menpos that ...

Re: Zoombang GLOVES
JB, This brings up the idea that Zoombang, or anyone for that matter, could re-design the way that hockey gear is assembled. What I mean is that they let their gear grow from gloves. Rather than create elbows and vams, they have gloves with giant cuffs. With some medieval influence, they could creat...

Try these. They are much better than regular shin guards, wrap around and have a "greave like" shape.
They are the ones I have worn under my boots for quite some time, and they virtually mold and wrap around your shins. They are also taller than normal shin guards.

I am looking for an onion shaped stake to use to make 14th century pointed elbows.
Think you could do something like that?
Thanks and let me know.

I had a similar one for a while- here are the things I noticed- The sides don't really get affected too badly at all. If you grind the skin off the end, though, that promotes the sword dying much faster. I wanted to do another one of these and then put an outer layer of rawhide (is that still legal?...

Re: The cluture of no arm hunting
The concept of "fairness" as defined by various Kingdom fighting cultures has also seemed to affect the manner in which they fight in certain areas. When I first moved to Caid, the idea of "fairness" extended to the expected courtesy that when you took an opponent's leg or arm, y...

Roll your hand over some towards your head, start a standard moulinet, and drop it (backblade) to the outside of your opponent's offside thigh. Easy as pie, quick, and easy on your joints.

Re: Question for HG Alaric regarding chin strap attachment..
The tie back system I use is similar to that in Insane Irish's pictures. rather than leather straps you can use a 4 point string system- run a string through either side of the chin strap, and then either end through holes where the mounting points would be for the rivets. Gather the strings in the ...

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
My impression of Iron Chicken was that it was a "high guard" with one's elbow sticking out and above one's head, sword pointing down or to the side. The arm, in effect blocking the top and one side of the head, and in some Kingdoms, taking advantage of the notion that arms were not courteo...

YG Gavin, I think you are misinterpreting what I said. I didn't comment on how the hand was used, really about the wrist.
