I consider myself in the bastard line of Feral. My Knight Count Sit Arlof O'Donovae of Aranmoor, was for all intents and purposes a squire of Master Feral. He moved to Florida for school and officially became a squire of Earl Seosaidh, and as such won Crown (keep in mind much of his training came at...

I dont want to derail the other thread any further, but feel this is worthy of some more discussion. We could really use a re-visit of the Peter van Dorn bowling ball experiments but find some way to look at kinetic energy as well as momentum and try to emprically establish a 'good' shot. Then we can look into developing a helm standard that meets the functional requirements. Sean There have to be...

I saw a guy sparring with Duke Timothy recently and the guy had a beautiful stainless norman helm. Tim was using a trashed pell sword and placed four flat snaps in a row to the guys head. As each shot landed it left a serious dent(almost creased). I watched this thinking "wow Tim's using a shi...

I think most people don't accurately gauge their material when producing helmets. With that being said, and some experience in the field, I think it is important to look at the empirical evidence on the hats being worn by top level fighters. For years, I thought Michael of Bedford's helmet had no de...

I think we should simply admit we are playing with batons and call them that- and get rid of "deaths" while we are at it. I really don't believe that 1 shot kills with a sword exist through chain over leather- certainly not to the extent that we would seem to think that they do. We can mak...

The SCA doesn't look more period on the field for several reasons: 1) lack of understanding- without having access to the genuine article, most people don't understand what they are trying to make in size, or proper shape. 2) lack of care- many people just don't care to look right, use the proper ma...

don't forget that a measured length of rattan put into different basket hilts might yield very different blade lengths. 36" of rattan in a michael hilt will give you about an inch to two of blade length over a plastic basket hilt.

Authorize and bring your armor to Pennsic. Remember you really only get hit once per battle, and it's an experience you won't want to miss.

Plus if you have it there you can get some good training in and meet a lot of the people who you've been chatting with for years.

Gavin,

I would tend to agree with you. I've been trying to study Michael of Bedford's style for a while now, and I think that although he is grounded, he actually starts in the abs and shoulder, not the foot.

And as you suggest, the shot hits with much more poewr when grounded than not.
