I can only use fairy wands anymore because of my hand getting messed up.

I think it is hilarious that apparently no other fencers on this forum would support a fencing peerage or a fencing crown tourney -- or at least admit to such support. With no admitted support from any fencers for this fourth peerage, where the hell is the push coming from exactly? I think you are ...

How is the SCA a Role Playing game? We aren't playing pretend. And i dont pretend to play bass or pretend to hit people with sticks. I do it. That is not playing a role. Thats being something. Yes you are playing because when you get hit a few times you are going to lie down on the ground. That's n...

My issues with fencers now are simple 1. Being told they can easily kill the heavy list guys with a thrust to the eye slot. this is in every face to face conversation I have ever had with a fencer.(they always bring it up) seriously the archers can kill us from a distance but they are a lot more hu...

Something that Doug, and many other people fail to take into account it performance theory- or the cultural idea that we all perform roles within society. Within every group that we are part of there are a series of performed actions and roles that we all must play. Even those who choose to try and ...

Hi Richard, I hope you are well. I just wanted to quickly disagree with you on one point that you made, I am pretty much totally in agreement with you otherwise on your fine list: Siege bothers me far less than CA. Why? For some of the reasons given above. 3. Siege weapons guys don't do the happy da...

As much as you do in any other combat art. Fencers... (OK, outside of east. Sorry, but your fencing approach out there is screwed. I've had two cadets move to the area, they both just basically retired from fencing rather than try to adapt to East fencing standards. I suppose you could apply the sa...

I really wonder about this idea some of us have that medieval archers only fired en masse. If someone could show me reasonable documentation that medieval archers were only used en masse, I would be grateful for the lesson. Frankly, why does this even matter in the SCA context? Here are the only qu...

I disagree with you. The single hardest aspect of this situation to figure out is whether or not the fighting is at a peerage level or not. Agreed, but that can not be discovered by a Knight testing that person at that persons chosen form is what I'm getting at. I agree it will be hard to find what...

... Peerages, long term membership, and a widening gap between the haves and have nots needs to be addressed before we add in a significant way to the haves. ... I'd like to hear more about those thoughts. Peers generally don't quit the SCA. We keep on making them. We have more Kingdoms and not a w...

Ideally, this would involve active participation. Think a Cut and Thrust guy should be made a peer? Then the knights should evaluate him the way they do a candidate for knighthood...go out and fight him. I'm not a peer, or a white scarf. But in my uneducated opinion, I don't think go out and fight ...

My wife is a Rose, its six months of service, no other peerage can be gotten that quick. It is not considered the same as a Knight, Laurel, or a Pelican. It also varies on the amount of work done. Some Queens work there but off some dont. You can just show up to 4 events during your reign and still...

Here is another question to consider. Say a fencing/combat related activity peerage suddenly exists. Within 6 months, I bet pretty much every Knight worth his or her salt would have to be considered for it, if they decided to put the time and effort in to train for it. Combat archery is stupid easy....

Nope. I agree with pretty much everything Thorstenn has already said here. Pardon my following ramblings, but I will try and explain how I feel about a 4th Peerage... It is a horrible idea, and not because of what it is, per se, but because of what it will do to the SCA. The SCA already has too many...

Don't scabbarded weapons count as armor for one or two shots or something? I seem to recall that rule somewhere from the days of yor (and I don't mean the Hunter from the Future). Rowan, I really don't need 10-12 guys, just 4 or 5 to get the job done right. There aren't really that many big units in...

Try using multiple layers of canvas each soaked in elmer's glue and attached with that. A layer of the car edging under this will help the canvas last longer too. Then use a nice looking piece of leather for edging, and your canvas covered shield approaches the weight and feel of a light wooden one,...

Ludial, You just have no concept of how SCA combat works on the field. I assure you, that there are heavy fighters who you absolutely would never be able to run away from. Combats are generally short, quick and to the point. As much as you might want to think that shield walls or static, or that you...

Dear Ludial- I don't know how long you have been fighting, but it sounds like you never have. SCA combat is a gem, and like other games has a series of rules and courtesies that are expected on the field. It is NOT a simulator of real combat (although a lot of people try and think it is). Like other...

It doesn't matter if CA is historically accurate or not. What matters is whether the addition of CA to a battle is a) safe for the participants and b) adds to or detracts from the fun of the game. Is it safe? Is it fun? If the answer is yes to both of those, then CA should be kept. If the answer is...
