Re: jousting
Each competitor would also be required to go through a complete jumper course with a minimum of 4' - 4' 3" fences. Or we could go more toward a Grad Prix course and bring it up to 5' - 5' 3". While I think I understand your points, I fail to see how running a jumper course is needed to demonstrate ...

Except that it seems most of the jousting terminology is French in origin. Before the introduction of the tilt, I haven't seen any references to the word tilting, rather such activities are referred to as Hastiludia (spear-play) leading to Hastiludia pacifica or jousts of peace. There were other act...

With sca jousting the shaft of the lance is made of cardboard and at minimum, the last two feet are polystyrene foam. Both of these sections are 2" in diameter. Even with the size difference, I think you horse would be safe doing SCA jousting. The cardboard can hit hard enough to leave a bruise, but...

I know Clephan's book is a bit dated, but from page 39 Many injuries had befallen the riders in the tourney by the collision of their horses, sometimes by accident, at others by design, and the idea of the tilt was concieved greatly with a view towards obviating this danger. The tilt, or toile , was...

I like the look of those. With the taper of the spear, is it appropriate for them to taper from maximum diameter at the base narrowing towards the head, or would the maxiumum thickness be somewhere in the middle, narrowing towards each end, similar to the Jeff Hedgecock's lances shown in this thread...

Ok, I think I understand, the foam is on the sides of the thrusting tip to give it a spear profile. As for using the low profile thrusting tips, I figured the two-handed thrusting tips were a more likely candidate, since they already have the cross section required for rattan spears. They just lack ...

Ok, so a coronel shape is wrong for this time period. SyrRhys, I'm not following how that spear head is constructed. Do you have any pictures or sketches of this design? As for tapering the spear shafts, would it be a straight taper or a dual taper? What would be appropriate for the maximum diameter?

I do agree with your points about SCA EQ, and like you said most in the SCA aren't concerned with horse size. I was mainly directing that at liviatasia, as I think it is a shame to give up any activity you think might be interesting because a small group decided it would be fun to tease. As you said...

I can't find my reference at the moment, but in agreement with Jeff I think that evidence has shown that horses were smaller as you go further back in time. I have one book that shows that around the 12th century average horse size was about 12 hh with the size increasing about a hand per century go...

Not really worried about em going through my visor. I apologize if any of the points I'm about to make have been addressed, I've read throu...

Heavy Leather: stiff, oak-tanned leather at least 1/8 inch (3.2mm) thick. Often referred to as belt leather or 11oz. leather. 11oz? I thought belts were about 8 oz. That section seems to contradict itself since an ounce of leather is 1/64th of an inch. 1/8 inch thick leather is 8 oz leather, 11 oz....

I heard that the easiest way to get some Atlantium, would be to send someone to the Atlantium mines for you. I'm sure you could get loads of volunteers to spend a few years in the mines for you. If you send enough, I'm sure that in time, they could mine enough Atlantium to reinforce your entire skel...

I'll take a stab at answering, although this is based on what I have been told by scribes and heralds in Atlantia, not something I have read in policy anywhere. In Atlantia, while someone may be called up into court and given an Award of Arms, they will not recieve the actually award scroll until th...

It is a propane burner. He describes it in his pages on tools and methods. http://www.anvilfire.com/21centbs/armor/atli/atli-et01.htm In a footnote at the bottom of the second page he explains a little bit about the burner. He has put a Ron Reil style burner into his Mark 4 hood I think. Information...

Last I checked, Tandy's website says that the amount listed in your cart when you buy something is just an estimate. They price it by the square foot or pound, but usually sell it by the hide, so you can't buy just a few square feet. They then go pull a hide of the type you selected and bill you for...
