Both tig and mig can be used for steel and for aluminum. The main difference is the shielding gas, current type, and iron used in different applications.

Don't forget, the rules require it to be 16 gauge in its finished state, at least the way many people interpret the rules. It depends on if you are talking ferrous metals and nonferrous metals, as they each use a different gauge system.
