I agree with Gwen that it's a lot easier to do 15th century LH in the U. S., chiefly due to the increase in sutlers (like Historic Enterprises) who are committed to making quality soft and hard kit. What I find myself wondering is if the "SCA standard" sometimes stymies the best efforts of such grou...

So what does it take to get 15th C. LH to thrive in the US?
A previous thread posted by Joram von Essen pointed up the fine job his group is doing in Europe. Sadly, it also caused a number of people to despair of reaching the standard of European LH. Chef de Chambre espoused the view that the only resources the U. S. lacked was proper castles and strong dete...

Hjalmr: Conrad no longer has a reliable internet connection. He also doesn't have a home phone number. Conrad's currently dealing with some profound "real life" issues (the details of which should not be aired on a BB), suffice it to say...real life sucks for him right now. You might want to send hi...

Ok so we missed one important thing. How much cord did you guys buy and how many plates did you have aprox? Thanks Ogedei: Keep in mind that I used Maxi-Cord (currently out of business) 8mm braided macrame cord. To build a djawshan that was knee-length with sleeve flaps took 1 1/2 100 yard spools. ...

Giles: I've portrayed both sides of the Crusades coin. I've armoured as an Egyptian Mamluk as well as a 12th to 13th century Templar. It'd be hard to do a Crusader portrayal without the insight of the Crusades through the eyes of Islam. The countries and cultures that had contact with Western Europe...

Hey there fellow lamellar junkies. How much of this stuff do I need to lace together a suit? How complicated a suit are you planning for? Torso? Skirts? Sleeve plates? Anyone have any other comments as to it's durability in a metal suit? Braided macrame cord is very durable if : ⋅ All of...

Re: Side discussion stainless vs mild steel
:?: Does either weigh more? If stainless is harder to dent/etc, then you can use a thinner piece for the same protection? Does anyone here work in stainless often? I'm looking to get a new breastplate (I'm tired of functional, I want shiny now..) but with the new baby I don't have time to make it m...

Chef commented before that a comparison of the SCA to what the 15th century groups in this country does is a comparison of apples and coconuts. It's a valid observation. These groups are focused on a specific time and place in history (in many cases, a specific date). The SCA is focused in a very lo...

I find myself agreeing with Chef de Chambre on this score---even though I don't have a dog in this fight, either. It's all a question of determination in some cases. Many of the groups here in the U. S. that are endevoring to do "experimental archaeology" are at least trying to do it the right way. ...

Do you have Forth Armoury's web page bookmarked? Part of the problem is this: The moment Steve announces he has do-it-yourself supplies available on his web page, they're sold out within the day. I'm also working on one of these and have a question. Does the "pot" or upper section have a round or oval shape (of you where to look at it from the top down)? Mine has a oval shape, but I keep thinking it would look better round. However the oval is a better fit to the head. By the way nice work!...

WMA and Muttman: This is cool for Muttman's household! Having period-looking digs in the encampment is always a plus.
