A few little questions though. In that time period were gambesons worn over a tunic or under. Also, were vambraces common then. What kind of surcoats were they wearing, and what level of heraldry were they at? And finally, should I just make my gambeson big enough to fit over some light plastic arm...

Deus = God Vulte = wills it Therefore the Templar war cry Deus Vulte (God wills it). Deus Invico (Invictu) is God is invincible According to my handy Latin dictionary. Actually, the battle-cry of the Templars is "baucent" , after their parti-colored standard. The generic Crusader battle-cry was "De...

And I will prominently display the motto: "Deus Invicto" Why? That means "God, I am undefeatable." If you mean "God is undefeatable" it's "Deus invictus." ("-o" is the first person verbal ending in Latin -- and as "Deus" is both nominative and vocative, it can only mean that you're talking to God a...

Ernst: Precisely the point I'd made earlier. If you want to do Third Crusade, hide the torso armour behind a surcoat. Body armour that was visible for that period was primarily maille . References to other items (Even allowing for their mention in the time period) were exceptions rather than the rul...

Dark lamellar pat????
Karl: Dark lamellar pat??? I believe I've given Polarus information that was varied, and appropriate for what a Third Crusade soldier would have worn (which is specifically what he asked for). Further, I've done my level best to assist him with ideas on no less than three different styles of semi-ri...

Templar Bob, you got any links to those types of helmets you were talking about? Like pictures? It would eb greatly appreciated. Sir Gaston and Tarquin, I was under the impression that that style helmet was 12th century. What documentation do you have? ILLEGAL DECLARATIONS: No mention of religion, magic, superstition, or of supernatural powers in connection with combat is permitted. Your Grace: It seems that the best way to change CA to where it "makes more sense" as Sir Richard Blackmoore says, would be to make an overhaul on how armour is judged. Plate harnesses would have to be "proof" against most forms of archery, and (more importantly) such rules would have to be rigidly ...

Polarus: Should you opt for going with a later impression (as Muschijaeger suggests above), the kit would make you more in line for for a "Battle of Lake Peipus" type kit, suitable for the Crusades in eastern Europe and Russia against the Baltic pagans and Eastern Orthodox. Polarus: Another option to consider is to concentrate your money on purchase of a pot helm or round-top helm with a visor--maille can be added to the helm to simulate the "cap with a coif" effect. Much of the armour you wear from neck to knees can be hidden beneath a surcoat with elbow-length sleeve...

A simple question on the Churburg Segmented Breastplate
All: Does anyone know what the inscription on the brass strips of the Churburg segmented breastplate is? I'm looking for the information to replicate the Latin phrase on another piece of armour. Yes, and i'm looking for a picture of that bit of soft kit. The one piece of iconography I know of that shows the form of this hat is in a 14th century illumination in Renart de Nouvel , a satirical piece that makes fun of the Military orders. It depicts Renart the Fox, intervening in a debate betw...

I was researching crusader armor and I saw an old article written by the knowledgable Robert De Tyre where he described crusaders wearing a skull cap, or capot. T-Bob, The problem with that, and it's an idea I love, is, in some kingdoms, a shield NOT controlled by the hand is considered armor and subject to be lost at the first strike.
