spaulder measreuments
Is 11 inches across too big for the top shoulder piece of spaulders? How big can I make them? The patterns dont seem very large and I need something to go over the top of a gambeson and chainmail. This is for late 14th C btw, so I dont think I can use pauldrons for that time period. Thanks.

constructing an authentic spiked buckler
I'm interested in making a spiked buckler and I thought I would put this here for some feedback. Have any spiked bucklers survived? If anyone has some good ideas as to how the spike was constructed, if it was hollow or solid how it was attached to the umbo I'd be interested to know them. Cheers.

Sword and Buckler - superior/inferior techniques
I thought I'd like some feedback regarding two main fighting styles using sword and buckler. The techniques are: 1. Using the sword and buckler together, buckler guarding the sword hand (as often seen in I.33) 2. Using the buckler to create a cone of defence and focusing on the opponents sword hand ...

spiked crossguards
Does anyone have any pictures or photos of crossguards with spiked ends (for using with murder strikes and the such) modelled off images or existing swords say from the 13th-15th century?
Please give details of date and other info if possible.
Thanks.

What are some good ideas for prolonging a shinai's life for use under these circumstances (other than not striking full impact).
I thought binding in leather might let it live a bit longer... thoughts anyone?

1000 yr old Medieval Arrowhead on auction
Hi, just wondered if anyone wanted to have a look at this, I have no idea if it is really as old as it states or what it is worth.

Re: Steel Combat helmets
I've since gotten my hands on some scratch resistant shatterproof poly carbonate plastic that is clear and ideal for covering they eyeslots of my helms (and its cheap!). I've put it to the test with hacking and thrusting it against a solid surface and it does not crack but dents with the impact. Ver...

how do you find the mixture of religion (what religion is it?), youth and medieval combat go together? I am not religious myself but I think it sounds like a great idea, esp for kids who would need some kind of outlet but to get something like that off the ground with the support of adults and your ...

what kind of eye safety protection are we talking about here? what sort of material do you use specifically that stands up to the strike of a metal weapon.

yes I will be working with shinai also, but am looking for thoughts that might allow for metal weapon impact that reflects the techniques taught in the fectbuchs so I am not really too interested in near vertical head strikes (we do have that system of fighting here) but a way to make the head of yo...

head strike safety ideas for metal weapon combat
I've been thinking on the possibilities of how to safely fight using headstrikes with blunt metal weapons. These ideas might seem kind of weird but its all I have come up with so far so let me run them by, see if anyone has tried them or has thoughts on them. The first idea was to somehow attach a c...

Liechtenauer's sword and buckler vrs longsword (WMA)
I've been looking into Liechtenauer's sword and buckler and longsword material and just wondered if anyone familiar with the wards and techniques of the system care to comment on who would have the advantage of two fighters, one armed with sword and buckler the other with longsword.

I would prefer something a bit more interesting than lots of holes. If able please provide what the design symbolises and ...

thanks for the replies so far. regarding plastic beneath chainmail (or plate armour, or scale or cop or whatever) is there anything in particular that people see that is bad with wearing plastic beneath 'authentic' armour. making and wearing plastic armour 4 under chainmail (SCA)
Having invested in some springsteel butted chainmail and been told that it stands up pretty good to SCA bashing I am considering finishing off my 2mm thick great helm to wear with the chainmail. head pieces and face coverings
A couple of years ago my wife got sunburnt lips and now when she exposes her face to bright sun she develops a rather nasty reaction causing her lips to welt up, this usually takes about a week to go away. Now the most time we spend outside is usually at medieval events and faires and such and this ...

sharpened throwing spears for actual use
Hi, seeing as I probably wont have a crossbow sorted out for awhile I'm interested in other ranged weapons and thought the easiest to construct would be throwing spears probably as used around the time of the Battle of Hastings. I would greatly appreciate some measurements to assist me in creating s...

Nothing as heavy as SCA at all. A piece of perspex clear plastic (dont know why I spelt it perplex higher up) should be of sufficient strength. short spears, glaives, polearms
I thought I might try making a short polearm weapon, a spear or perhaps a glaive, for my partners eldest son who is 13. I'd be making it out of left over materials and the hardwood haft is just a bit over 150cms in length but that will be stretched out a bit when I attach the weapon head. I know its...

I have taken an interest in making a flanged mace - but I am not too familiar with the designs maces had during the 14th century. Many of the flanged maces I have seen state they are 15th-16th century. Any guidance on maces of the 14th century would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi all, I havent done much research into this at all so excuse if this is a repeated topic but I am interested in finding out how difficult it would be to make a crossbow, similar to a crossbow during the middle ages, perhaps something 14th century. I dont actually want it extreme high powered but t...
