Forum Suggestion
If its possible I would like to suggest that board members be allowed to award points to others who recreate fantastic objects such as Jeff Js chair project.
On another forum I am on we are able to award "Laudes" points to other members for contributing information, or reconstructions.

Since most camo jobs were painted in the field with lose regulations on the paint, there is a wide variety to chose from. I just mix the paint by hand and match it up to originals. Plus a decades worth of experience with originals gives me a good idea the shades to use. I have been restoring helmets...

Does the jar have to be stone (as in part of the chemical proccess), or can it be glass and still get the same effect? Also, how wide is the belt? Do you have a pattern you would be willing to share? Godfrey, The stone jar has nothing to do with the process. Its just what was in the shop when I mad...

Can you go into more detail about the dying process? Generally what I do is throw a couple of steel wool pads into a stone jar I have filled with white vinegar. Let them disolve over a period of a week or so. Then I use a paint brush to paint it on. Its more of a chemical reaction than it is a &quo...

New 4th Century Roman Belt
I recently made this belt for a friend of mine in Finland. Its made from 8 oz vertan leather and dyed with iron filings soaked in vinegar. Then it was finished off with a application of beeswax and buffed. The stitching is all done by hand with natural materials. The buckle, tip, and belt rings were...

No, we don't. What if the Normans secretly invented both of those technologies, used it at Hastings, and hid the technology so well that it disapeared from the anals of history never to be heard of again until the machine gun was invented over again much much later? So do we suppose they hid the te...

Some Armour Restoration

This helmet was a total rust bucket when I picked it up a couple weeks ago at a local gunshow. I first removed all the rust that I could with sandpaper and then Naval Jelly. T...

Early Medieval Belt Auction 14th/15th Cent
Just messing around in the shop today to occupy my mind, and get it off the bad stuff happening in my life. I am going to auction this simple belt. Its 1/2 inch wide with small incised lines down the edges with some simple stamping of small flowers. The leather itself is dyed near black with a vineg...

Holy moly! Why is this the first time I have seen his stuff! This is a heck of a find. Indeed! I'd like to find someone doing work like this on this side of the pond, personally. I'm sure cross-ocean shipping must be murderous. Not as mad as you think! Its usually around 20 USD to ship a boss here ...
