I have made more medieval, and ancient clothing from surplus blankets than store bought fabric. Several of my medieval tunics were made from blankets for cold weather wear, along with hosen. Personally I think they make great cold weather clothing. I am planning on making another Thorsberg style tun...

There is a Roman "swiss army knife". Maybe one of the Roman guys here will be able to point us to pictures. I assumed this would have been posted already. There seems to be several of these extant in museums, and private collections. Leading me to believe they may have been a common item. http://ww...

Roman Tools

Inspired in part by Matt Amts recreations I made these last night in the shop from some scrap. All in all it took about 30 mins worth of work. I still need to polish them a little more.

I am talking about people/groups that are just in it to portray battles or just play like they are a soldier and not portray the historical life of a soldier. sounds like the classic definition of "reenactor". Thats why Wolfie and I are conducting a 1st century Roman scout in January with period co...

Thanks! and please tell us more about the shields. Was it possible to view the shields from the back? Lorenzo the best I could see of the backs were that they were of wooden construction. Jason those are bucklers. The caption said they were 15th or 16th century. I could see from the back that they were wooden covered in leather, or rawhide.

14th Century Maille Shirt from Luzern, Switzerland

I had read about this shirt 2 years ago in a book on the history of Switzerland. So I finally got around to making a trip to Luzern 2 weeks ago to find the museum that it is housed in. The story behind this shirt is that it was originally captured at the battle of Sempach. This roughly dates the shi...

Viking Romans?

Archaeological findings have strengthened notions amongst scholars that quite a few Norwegians, from the farthermost north of Europe, in all likelihood served as soldiers in the Roman legions. Ancient weaponry, cups and coins all points towards a more extensive cultural exchange between Norway/Scand...
