12 pounds is ridiculous.

Owen what makes you think it wasnt? Just curious because the reconstruction I have handled is definately a bear to wield.

My Republican scutum weighs somewhere around 15lbs.

Syr Finn,

How authentic are you wanting to make this? I can point you in the direction for some excellent information if you are wanting to do it authentically.

I think the antler fittings are spiffy, and bring a new look to the overused cast pieces. Bone, antler and horn were the plastic of the ancient and medieval worlds.

I feel pretty well convinced that Crusaders adopted captured lamellar defences as proof against arrow fire. Given the climate, use of a lighter defence than the gambeson/ haubergeon/breastplate/jupon plus leg and arm harness of Northern Europe makes a lot of sense. So this is speculation only? or d...

The Fayam shield found in Egypt which most consider to be Roman weighs near 22 pounds. Most modern reconstructions are anemic when compared to that weight.

Mike there is evidence for Roman lamellar as early as the 1st century, but it is always in context with Roman aux troops. I can try to scan the info from Robinsons book sometime later, but I am in the middle of a move.

Here is a thread I started on Roman Army Talk you may be interested in.

Gottfried,

The finds at Wisby showed use of lamellar as late as the mid-14th century. Most people consider the armour used at Wisby to be out of date by the time it was deposited, but none the less it was still being used.

Tim,

Honestly I would stay away from curly maple. None of the pieces I have viewed in museums in Europe have curly maple. I would personally go for a piece of cherry, European walnut, or plain maple.......... might consider apple, or pear they are nice also.

PP, I'm very interested in the Oakeshott info. As I understand it, that book was written some time ago (I can't find a publication date), and wonder how it was determed that the belt was made of deerhide, as opposed to any other kind of leather. Was this the sword of St. Maurice you're referring to...

Deerskin is too soft and stretchy to support a sword of that size. You could cover a thicker leather with deer or goat for the colour- Jeff has a couple of belts done that way, and he did his bridle with the gold-plated bosses and mounts that way. In WW1 British tank crews wore a maile mask to prevent steel splinters from easily penatrating the face. Also I have seen a pair of German WW1 leather gloves with maile palms. I have no idea what they were used for, but I was told they were used for stringing barbed wire.
