A lot of the "cannon balls" sold on eBay are mill balls.
Part of the reason you see so many of them.

I haven't tried it, when I make charcoal I start with a fire then sply restrict air flow. 55 gallon drum then out the lid on. From lighting the match to opening the drum aroud 10 hours or less. This is just theory, and its worth experamenting, a hardness tester should be enough. Xrd/xrf units may be...

Tomas have you considered scrapping as a side busness?
I know the real job keeps you busy commuting Mexico.
But it seams you have decent luck finding pieces and know how to ship things in flat rate boxes.

A handful of shops hold "project weekends" or will run a "classes" now and again. Very few have anything close to a formal apprenticeship. A few trades like steam fitting, welding, and fabrication have a bit of overlap with armoring. Its a lot easier to find meaningful employment as a welder particu...

Do you hae a sketch? I may have steered the conversation off course. The "zweilhammer" kit is just one example of the vendel helms. It sounds like a vendel helm, possibly the type 13. I would go a little heavier, SCA rules list the .0625 as the minimum finished thickness. If your dishing, grinding, polishing or otherwise shaping the steel it thins a little. Many commercially available sheets of 16 gauge start off thin to begin w...

I have scene a few pieces that have been treated with linseed oil and such on the handles.
Everything else is under tape so it doesn't really do much for the aesthetic.
being on the rattan skin they wear off fairly quick.

You may just need something a little deeper and a bit more padding. Talk with someone local that can see how well the pieces stay in place as you move. That particular type of padding tends to breaks down over time. It almost looks like the elbow strap is simply a bit of cord and a cord lock to tens...

Just about every blacksmith can do the hinges/handle.
You may need to narrow it down a bit.
Budget, time, handle/hinge style, latch/lock style.
To be honest a working medieval lock is a fairly advanced project and costs a bit.

My understanding is that pine resin and brewers pitch are derived from pine sap. Heating, seperating out foreign material, and cook off excess moisture, notably water, turpentine and such. A wax mix maybe another option. Adding resin or pitch can change things a little. Years ago I was told to case leather and buff with a clean rag to rove excess dye before sealing. Then buff again and reapply at least twice. It cuts down on the bleading issue a lot. I'm not sure how well linseed or w...
