Re: looking for precedence on 2 persona Ideas
I've collected a few images of acrobats & jugglers whose performances have to do with swords and/or knives. Here's a few of them: ⋅ m (first quarter of the 13th century) ⋅ m (c. 1340) ⋅ m (1558; apparently a woman) I don't think I've seen any jesters entertaining...

Not to derail this thread too much, but I spotted a new book on the V&A site (also available through Amazon once it comes out), and it looks like this might be a good book for you 16th century types to add to your holiday wish-lists. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1851775811?ie=UTF8&a...

I probably found it through http://www.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/realonline/ -- but it's not coming up through the path I'd have thought it'd be in (it looks like it ought to have been under Materielle Objekte / kaestchen).

You can find some leather-covered caskets at http://larsdatter.com/boxes-leather.htm -- you might find the polychromatic painted one at http://tarvos.imareal.oeaw.ac.at/server ... 014525.JPG to be inspiring.

The reason why I doubt that it's sugar is that the sugar loaves I've seen from that time seem to be a lot smaller (see m for some images); the sugar trade at the time that this painting was done would have (IIRC) been coming from Morocco, Cyprus, etc., so it's not that I doubt that it's sugar based ...

Started developing http://larsdatter.com/bag-hats.htm (and http://larsdatter.com/acorn-hats too, but they seem to be more of a 15th century thing so far).
Bertus, something about that description made me think of the illustrations in the Wolfegg Housebook.

Re: Pennsic Panic Projects - what did you get done?
Pennsic was a bit more of a spur-of-the-moment trip for us than it's been in the past. I made a linen tunic and a linen cote for The Boy, both out of scraps I'd saved from past projects. (So now, conveniently, he has garb that coordinate with his dad's. Aww.)

That last bit aside, it looks to me as though all through the 14th century the fashionable way to wear the headgear was to flop a bit of it -forward- yet modern reenactors are flopping them to the side, like a santa hat. Why is that? Even if the shape's the same, wearing it flopped to the side make...

The one you linked to in the post immediately prior to mine; the revival bag hat. #1) This image is interesting because it looks very regional to me, maybe Sienese or Iberian: m The structure of the painting makes me think it's a saint.
