I'm on forced hiatus due to January cold and a kidney stone, but I'll be back in the shop ASAFP. Fortunately, orders are trickling in for In Stock stuff, so I'm not quite dying yet. / I'm limited to low-impact stuff due to the kidney stone, so I'm working on some leather and soft metal stuff mostly.

*chime, chime* Backing up Doug's argument are some of the nice, detailed pics in the Prunner Churburg book. You can easily see on at least one original 14th C aventail that the rings are made of round wire, with the overlaps very clearly flattened to a thickness that is less than that of the wire us...

He was probably told correctly about the lack of (legal) availability in Kalifornia (at least for individuals). I recently found out that a large proportion of Fiebing's leather finishing products are no longer available in KA, EXCEPT to industry, I believe. That's one reason that Tandy/LF is trying...

Noe: The punches are standard, at least here in the US. The small punches are M8 x 1 thread (metric), and the large punches are M10 x 1.25. You can order them from Tandy Leather Factory, or I can get them for you.

I should have 4 or 5 of these ready this coming week.

Well, they have 'em now and they use 'em... Actually, I figured the pop can would be a good universal scale-ey for size comparison. Even if folks can't read a ruler, they know a pop can when they see one! Gunthar, I would have to make a tall, round bottle for you. Would probably take a month or so. ...

Several leather bottles and kestrels/costrels for sale

I made several of these a couple of months ago (when we had our first bout of unpleasantly cold weather), but never got around to posting them. I still have several of them if anyone is interested. Here is a list of what I have currently: 3 Small round flask (16 oz) 1 Small square flask (24 oz) 1 Sm...

I'm sure that there are at least a couple of people still making ready-made thrusting tips. **?**

OK-at last, the particulars. Any of you who read my initial market survey post have probably noticed that I've added several features to the prototype that I hadn't initially planned. OK-last pics for now, showing the eyelet-setter and the back side of the eyelet that I set with it. It's still $100 shipped, but it's the best price I've seen on it outside of the 3 or 4 I've seen on Ebay over the years.

'Nother market survey-kozane/iyozane (Japanese scales)?

In my continuing quest to find low-impact work to keep me busy while my arm heals up, I'm tinkering with the idea of making Japanese armor scales. Kozane were the smaller scales, which resulted in a double-thickness of material when they were laced together. Iyozane were wider scales which were inte...

Fun stuff to do with scrap leather-scales anyone?

I kept wondering what to do with all the leather scraps that I've accumulated. I figured the obvious answer was to make armor scales. I needed to light the forge for some small item a while back and decided to make a scale punch. As an amusing side note, it's made from one of the T-shaped jaws that ...

Market survey-heavy duty leather bench punch

I use a lot of heavy leather, and I decided some while back that I could really use an easier way to punch holes in it. I came up with the idea of modifying a standard arbor press. After a bit of tinkering, I ended up with the punch shown below. It's the shiz-met as far as I'm concerned. I can punch...

Re the punches Doug has been testing, we made them from 1/8" hardened dowel pins. They are very inexpensive from industrial suppliers like Grainger, etc. About $8 for 100, IIRC. They're heavy enough to withstand the work being done, but small enough that they can be easily ground/shaped. The sm...
