I'm on forced hiatus due to January cold and a kidney stone, but I'll be back in the shop ASAFP. Fortunately, orders are trickling in for In Stock stuff, so I'm not quite dying yet. / I'm limited to low-impact stuff due to the kidney stone, so I'm working on some leather and soft metal stuff mostly.

*chime, chime* Backing up Doug's argument are some of the nice, detailed pics in the Prunner Churburg book. You can easily see on at least one original 14th C aventail that the rings are made of round wire, with the overlaps very clearly flattened to a thickness that is less than that of the wire us...

He was probably told correctly about the lack of (legal) availability in Kalifornia (at least for individuals). I recently found out that a large proportion of Fiebing's leather finishing products are no longer available in KA, EXCEPT to industry, I believe. That's one reason that Tandy/LF is trying...

Well, they have 'em now and they use 'em... Actually, I figured the pop can would be a good universal scale-ey for size comparison. Even if folks can't read a ruler, they know a pop can when they see one! Gunthar, I would have to make a tall, round bottle for you. Would probably take a month or so. ...

I could POSSIBLY make a julian fry attachment, but I really don't know about the juicer... I have (of course) come up with a couple of new mods since I posted my pics... I have 5 of these about half-finished at this point. Waiting for the weather to warm up a bit before I do the last machining. Est ...

Several leather bottles and kestrels/costrels for sale
I made several of these a couple of months ago (when we had our first bout of unpleasantly cold weather), but never got around to posting them. I still have several of them if anyone is interested. Here is a list of what I have currently: 3 Small round flask (16 oz) 1 Small square flask (24 oz) 1 Sm...

Lots of folks here make baskets (including me). if you'd care to take a look, I usually have them listed on ebay, or you can contact me directly. m I also have a couple of sheet-steel cuphilts in stock. I'm sure that there are at least a couple of people still making ready-made thrusting tips. **?**

OK-at last, the particulars. Any of you who read my initial market survey post have probably noticed that I've added several features to the prototype that I hadn't initially planned. That has unfortunately had an effect on the price. It's subject to change a little, but right now, I think that I ca...

OK-last pics for now, showing the eyelet-setter and the back side of the eyelet that I set with it. The job was cake-no worrying about keeping the setter upright and folding over one side of the eyelet. The press should work equally well for other setting operations. There's also a pic of the keyhol...

Heavy leather bench punch-Progress report
Between duking it out with this %#*! kidney stone and the subarctic weather, I have managed to get some work done on the prototype punch. "Good" deal on 2500 Years of European Helmets
It's still $100 shipped, but it's the best price I've seen on it outside of the 3 or 4 I've seen on Ebay over the years.
http://www.amazon.com/500-years-Europea ... 0917714067
If I didn't already have a copy, I'd buy this one-the book is really good. And no, it's not mine.

'Nother market survey-kozane/iyozane (Japanese scales)?
In my continuing quest to find low-impact work to keep me busy while my arm heals up, I'm tinkering with the idea of making Japanese armor scales. Kozane were the smaller scales, which resulted in a double-thickness of material when they were laced together. Iyozane were wider scales which were inte...

Eeeenteresting... Believe it or not, I had no idea that guy existed. I have to say, though, I stil like mine better, at least for hole-punching. My reasoning mostly has to do with rigidity, which really helps when removing the punch from the leather after it's driven through. Unless you really crank...

Cool-food operated? You feed it hamburgers and it does the punching for you? I thought that was supposed to be how the whole shop monkey thing worked. I still like my creativity bent, and I'll cite 4 particulars: 1) I know that the arbor press version will handle heavy leather 2) It's still less exp...

OK-I'll try to get a couple made soon. However, it's looking like I'm going to be down and out with (yet another) kidney stone for a while. I'll keep you posted when I get to them. The press that I used to make this is rated as a 1/2 ton press, which would only be enough for very thin sheetmetal. Th...

Fun stuff to do with scrap leather-scales anyone?
I kept wondering what to do with all the leather scraps that I've accumulated. I figured the obvious answer was to make armor scales. I needed to light the forge for some small item a while back and decided to make a scale punch. As an amusing side note, it's made from one of the T-shaped jaws that ...

Market survey-heavy duty leather bench punch
I use a lot of heavy leather, and I decided some while back that I could really use an easier way to punch holes in it. I came up with the idea of modifying a standard arbor press. After a bit of tinkering, I ended up with the punch shown below. It's the shiz-met as far as I'm concerned. I can punch...

Several leather bottles/kestrels for sale shortly
Not to steal Micheal de B's thunder here. I think the guy has a psychic link with me, because every time I'm making bottles, he posts some for sale about a week before I'm ready... At any rate, I've got several nearing completion, including square and round flasks, and 4 different size kestrels, ran...

The spoon idea is amusing, and I bet it would sound really neat, but I figure it would end up being one heavy-arse suit of armor. Depending on what you're willing to spend, and how large you want your scales to be, Armamentaria offers lorica squamata and loose scales now: m I had been working on nea...
