The ever-vigilant Doug Confere brought this post to my attention. I haven't been on the archive much in the past few weeks. The ring visor in question is not based on anything historical that I've ever seen. The idea was provided by the buyer because he didn't want (and I quote from above) "another ...

Not knowing what type of helmet it is, I don't want to over-state the obvious, but have you considered riveting the extensions on? That would preclude the need to grind/polish the juncture, and doesn't require a stainless welding setup. Of course that might look like crap, depending on the helmet de...

Grizzly also makes models comparable to the Enco ones-they're currently on sale about $50 off, I think. Both these companies have stuff made in China, but it's good for Chinese. What I would personally like to have is a heavy-duty model (16 ga mild minimum) that's still small enough to fit in my sho...

This from my site: These plates are the later Imperial type, made from sheet and in use from the mid-1st C AD. They are 2" x 2-1/2" and have 1/8" ID rolls on either side. They have an embossed design of concentric rings-a popular motif at the time. Apparently, I forgot to include the size of the stu...

Anyone need a set of Roman Baltues Plates on the cheap?

I was making a batch of my standard concentric-ring Roman belt plates, and accidentally sort of... over-tweaked a few of them. Result was a hairline crack on one side of one ring on each of them. I've soldered the cracks so that only a tiny silver line shows from the front. See pic here: m I have 10...

I agree with HotWolf's advice with a couple of modifications. I had good results melting the wax (as he said, beeswax/paraffin mix) 'til it was very hot-a watery consistency. Brush it on heavy with a trash brush-cheap "chip brushes" work fine. The heat of the wax will cause some of it to absorb into...

Armor model kits

Many of us have seen and/or built some of these (including me, back in "the day"), but they're still cool. They're very accurate and good study models, not to mention great fun!

(No, I'm not the seller-and notice the difference in prices for the same kits.)

I like to use dome-headed rivets and put the rivet head outside, just for looks. This of course makes setting the rivets a lot more difficult... Gorm-that's a pretty good rundown of the process. Think I'll save it... You can cheat by sizing the paper with Aqua-net hairspray. (Sizing is making the paper bleed-resistant-kind of sealing the surface.) You can make paper, burnish it, then spray it with cheap Aqua-net. It works pretty well-better ...

I put some Roper Whitney tooling on ebay

Been collecting bits of this for a while. Finally sorted out the pile, took what I needed, and the rest is on ebay.

Most of it's for the #7, #7A, #8, and #2 punches. There's also a small lot for the bench punches.

I'm not sure if the Romans used paper or not-I don't think so. However, paper made from tree pulp (cellulose) is a pretty late invention-like from the 1800's. Prior to that, most European and American paper was made from linen rags. You can get the raw material from several online suppliers, or when...
