Hey, guys (and gals), Bexter tuned me into this thread a while back. I've edited and uploaded the oki-tenugui pics, and now I've actually gotten around to writing the pages for them. Now, however, I'm having ftp trouble and I can't get them uploaded... =( I'll post back here when I get the problem f...

WWI German helmets were made from a very tough alloy-silicon and high manganase if I remember correctly. I have read that they were hot-formed. Cool process. There's a different one-pic overview in Europaische Helme. It shows all the steps down to finished. I can't seem to upload pics at the moment-...

Hamish, the finger plates of those gaunts are a bit tricky. I haven't used that pattern for some time, and I've had several people email with questions about it over the past couple of years. [I think the editors might do everyone a favor by removing them from the archive???] If you want to make it ...

Hey, Ted, do you have a probable possible head count? From our neck of the woods there should be 3-4 people. I ask because I remember that some of the work stations had waiting lines at your inaugural armor-in. I particularly remember Beverly having a waiting line. (The shear, not the neighbor-get y...

Don't know where you guys are katana-shopping , but at shows I've been to, you can have a decent WWII katana for $400-$600 all day long. I've even seen a few traditionally-forged blades in WWII mounts in this range. Of course, I've also seen people ask $2K for a blade that looked like it had been us...

I think I only have one actual book, though I have lots of little pamphlets on specific projects. The book is "Figure Carving Finesse" and is excellent if you want to learn to carve stuff other than the western floral stuff that I've always hated. I think it runs about $10. I really like the ceramic...

If you guys are interested, you can see one solution to avoid bargrills on my site. Look under "helmets, 16th C, burgonet". The 2 I have shown are actually close-helm type construction, so the visor lifts instead of falls. The visors are pierced with barbell-shaped slits. Visibility and breathing ar...

I worked for years with just a Makita JS3200 (the 11 ga mild model). I finally got a B-2 about a year ago, but I only use it about 10% of the time or less. I find it easier to manipulate the shear with the metal clamped down than vice versa. I like being able to easily cut a piece from a 2 x 4 foot ...

I got the MOL knives/scabbards book recently. If you want to make authentic knives from the period/locale this book covers, you can't do better for a paper reference. It shows hundreds of period blades, including cross-sectional shapes at different points along the blade. I mostly build armor, but n...

If you end up having to bolt it down, just use 2 opposite corners and large wingnuts. That will speed up changes considerably. You could also just drill appropriate holes in the bench, set the form on top, and drop pins through the holes in both. It's not as stable, but it changes out very quickly. ...

If they have mounting holes, I would simply bolt them down-or if you have a nice heavy wooden bench, big lag screws work nicely. It's easy to weld mounting tabs to an oxy cylinder-or just drill holes in the corners of the plate if there's room. I find that with dishing forms (and most similar tools)...

Rosette washers?
Does anyone know of a commercial supplier for rosette washers? Maybe 3/8" to 3/4" dia? I'm not really interested in the the cast versions-I mostly need a smaller stamped type-and in quantity. Exact design/size/material/finish is somewhat flexible, depending on what may be available. I've scoured the...

I always find it cool to experience something theoritical firsthand-kind of like, "Hey-it DOES work!" A couple of comments on the discussion, for what they're worth: It's not too hard to increase the carbon content of a piece of steel in a regular coal forge. Just keep it high in the fire for a whil...

I have a hammer with a slightly domed round face that I like to use to make the 90 degree bend. To keep the piece from flattening out, you need to stretch the outer edge of the metal as you bend it outward. This is easily accomplished by using a hammer like I mention or one with a relatively wide pe...

The term Buff Leather usually applies to leather with an abraded finish as mentioned above, but it is not split leather like suede. The surface is similar, though finer.

I did quite a bit of reading and asking questions before I bought my MIG. I ended up getting a 110V Lincoln with a gas setup. (As an aside, Craftsman welders are also made by Lincoln.) Generally, I'm quite happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to buy another Lincoln. I use it on both mild and stainles...
