I'm giving commentary for the GW. I'd love to see someone offer to run this through the HCS next Pennsic. My earliest kit is a Norse kit with a goggled spangen helm. I don't think this goggled helm goes back this far, but its not my area of expertise. I believe there are some goggled Anglo Saxon hel...

I'm over at the shop fairly regularly. I've only seen Cet use his power hammer to make production helm halves. Having watched this process, I would never, ever, ever operate that evil machine. On slip and goodbye hand. Watching Cet is like watching an artist with it. Its even scarier when he does el...

Stephen VonDresden *again* ?? There must be someone out there who can beat this guy! Amazing. Duke Darius (speaking of inhuman monsters-in a good way) defeated him at the Winter Wolf tourney last year. But I'll grant you, seeing him lose is rare. I love watching him fight, the timing and dis...

What was the treatment of prisoners at this time? I know examples pre and post this period of enslavement. That is sort of what I'm trying to model here. Is that the correct model, or is it just a pure fight to the death/run away situation? Ransom probably is the wrong terminology here, I'm thinking...

Here are my suggestions, if you can give me more info then I already have on the flow of combat from the period, I should be able to help more. Please give me feedback where my assumptions are off. I’m going off of 10 year old memories hear. Given the probable numbers, rather then getting int...

The finals where Stefan von Dredan and Lucan. . I believe it was a replay of the finals 2 (or 3) years ago. I love watching either of them fight. They both have incredible reflexes, a deep skill set, but they are just normal sized. Its one thing when you see some physical monster destroy people, it...

Ahhh Thank you all. So Padrig was right after all. I wasn't sure becuase I never found that peticular rulling. Hey Tessa, might I suggest that in some combat archer handbook that the rule just discussed be in there so that the helm is properly defined? I would rather be able to quote a rule from a ...

This can be a very confusing topic because of how the SCA rules are laid out. (Richard I know you are aware of the structure and almost everything I’m posting, but I’m laying this out for new folks, not you). First Corpa (yes some of the basic fighting rules are in Corpa) Then the Soci...

Western Martial Arts Class in New Jersey
Saturday, September 18th, 2004 A lot of us talk about how much we want to learn Western Martial Arts here is your chance to work on it within the SCA. This is not about winning at SCA combat, this is about studying history. Support this event. Pre register for this event. It’s a very inexpens...

As far as I know, Padriag was right with respect of how most people at Pennsic play, but wrong with respect to what the rules say. Society level rules do not disallow thrusts to the side of the head. That I am aware, the Pennsic rules did not (nor for that matter do the eastern rules) state the side...

Disadvantage: There are very few confirmed examples of armoured combatants fighting with two equal length weapons compared to the vast weight of evidence pointing toward either two handed weapon or weapon and shield. By using two sword you are missing out on a chance to explore to the extent the SCA...

I agree with your general points Murdock, but I think we loose a lot more because of the Scadianisms, fantasy barbarians, and non attempts, then because of a nicely done Roman or Scythian portrayal. What makes us the real joke is the guy in fur and blue plastic. I think if we had a bunch of decent p...

I’m going to paraphrase a statements from Cet and state that almost any argument that references the SCA governing documents is inherently flawed, because the documents themselves are flawed. I feel Murdock’s pain. I have a large number of folks doing decent or better portrayals of med...

I’m not sure its off topic because we are talking about how much value is placed on authenticity. Also, keep in mind I realize to illustrate my point I’m making several assumptions. Yes, people would have to sacrifice some of their space (that’s why I added the comment about nee...

Thinking about it, it does give you an idea of where are values lie though. Nice period tents, while more common, are still far from the norm. Its a shame that there isn't enough social capital tied up in having a "period" encampment that folks aren't competing to have him there. Offering him space ...

You get at least 250squ feet in singles camping. Thats a shame for your barony. Most groups I've camped with encourage period tentage because it furthers the purported goals of the SCA. We allocated you less space if you camped in modern tentat and had a modern tent area that was hidden by the canva...

The HCS is an introduction to more historic forms of SCA combat. I’m trying to sell a mind set rather then a specific time and place. I hope that those who fight in the HCS will aspire to participate in something as impressive as the Combat of the Thirty. The HCS also lets folks experiment wi...

I’ve been thinking about the rules and how they’ll shape behavior. For negative outcomes there are 2 possibilities: 1. You are captured - you owe a ransom, but if your captor dies (not captured, but dies) you are no longer held for ransom and can return to the fight, otherwise you are ...

Same way many classes are taught a Pennsic on an "unofficial" basis. They were not on the schedule and were by invitation only. Folks just showed up and participated. Or the same way that there is a high end private fight practice of which I'm aware occurs at Pennsic most years. Several noted fighte...
