You can use all the little mind tricks in the world, but the guy who looks out the window, see's it 95 degrees with 99% humidity and bright sunshine, and decides this is the best time to go for his daily run, he's the one wearing a bit armour won't bother.

Just a note, last time I checked this was not an "official" tournament (this may have changed). It is not on the Pennsic shcedule. The SCA does not touch any of these funds. Its roughly the equivallent of a bunch of guys deciding to get together on the practice field and deciding to reward each othe...

Im a bit confused by all this. So you are saying I will get tokens euqal to the value of a knight i.e. 10 coins representing actual u.s. currency? Which I can then turn in for legal tender cash? Is this some type of fund raiser? If not I see this as a bad idea and setting a bad precedent. The prece...

The hard part is the prime days are so packed with fun things to do that something often has to overlap. I must drive the coordnator nuts because I have something going on every day and a whole list of "do not conflict" Plus I take over a list field. I've considered only running in the morning or ev...

That is a good idea, and if the battle field layout is similar to past years they will be quite close, but I’d hesitate to do if for a couple of reasons. First, while my lists are fairly simple, I’ve been told the Squire tourney can be quite a challenge to administer (as any large doub...

Pennsic Squires Tourney versus Plate and Mail.
I just noticed that the Plate and Mail is running up against the Known World Squires tourney. I’m thinking about moving the plate and mail times to earlier in the day, even though it will then be wrong in the schedule. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I’ve noticed the large number of ...

I was going to say that you have slimmed down quite a bit! Thanks, 2 /12 years of not being able to run due to ankle injury (that I got while training for sprint for the Woods flag at Pennsic), I finnally was able to strart piling on the miles again this spring. Of course a couple of weeks ago I ha...

Abjorn/Maeryk et al- Are you aware of any accounts that laud striking an unaware opponent? What was the context, revenge or honorable deeds of arms or something else? I would have to say that we can accept that vicious, backstabbing, horrific things were done on battlefields but that we don't need ...

lets not pick the "realism" argument here. it does not apply to sca sport combat since there is very little realism, or realty, in its design. we still have the indestructable shield, the one handed sword that kills with a single hit, arrows that defeat everything, rules, touch kills, and simple to...

Asbjorn: Give me evidience that striking from behind while on foot was not allowed in formal combats. I don't need to; it's not part of my argument . I contend that DKFB is inconsistent with medieval romance, not the historical practice. But does not using it deny us an essential understanding of w...

The SCA rules of the list cannot be compared to actual combat of pre 1600 - - or any other time. Can it? We're re-creating, not re-enacting. The most striking difference to me (Pas) is that WE call the blows not judges. Correct, We are recreating combat from pre 1600, without a predetermined winner...

Maeryk, I’m not sure that given the description you provided, it was legal. Eye contact has occurred with your opponent and the opponent has acknowledged you as a threat by reacting to you in some way (examples of which include, but are not limited to: nodding at you, making a defensive react...

Asbjorn- What you are referencing was a Society level ruling that was designed to specifically address the issue of combatants acting like Goldilocks in regard to blow calibration ("that one is too light, that one is too hard"...and none of them being "just right"). As a rule it is narrowly written...

IMHO, if its legal within the rules, its not unchivalrous. Just like taking arms or not giving up gained advantages in a list is not unchivalrous either. Same argument why I didn't agree with people giving you crap about your Crown finals. It is not against the rules to aim for the throat or groin ...

But Owen, my opponent is also not allowed to hit me excessively hard either, but at least in the East the Kingdom EM has stated that a blow that is excessive, and therefore illegal, (by Society level rules no less) must be taken. The precedent would seem to indicate that a blow can be both good and ...

One of the joys of using the "standing leg wounds" rule is that we get to dispense with the extra rules that are required to make kneeling leg wounds acceptable, such as those dealing with cork scewing, not striking the legs, and no overrunning. All of this leads the problem that suddenly a guy wit...

SCA tradition to make an a-historic SCA practice more palatable. Asbjorn Just because you *can* doesn't mean you *should*. You'd talk to him about a repeated hit in the cup, throat or elbow, yes? That said Barker and Barber report several instances of formal combats around set pieces similar in concept at least to fighting on a bridge or castle (squires recreating the ...

Based on the accounts I have read, I'd prefer a sides and top are proof rule against thrusts, but then you get into the discusion of what areas of the head the assumed armour covers. To me most of these discussions come down to the fact we don't tie particular instances of combat to a particular tim...
