Permissive rules – rules which tell you what you can do. Restrictive rules – rules which tell you what you can’t do. Most rule sets are going to be a mix of both. Also before you can start to decide the types of rules, you also should have a clear statement of what the rules are...

Jester, I support your attempt to make things more open to recreating pre 1600 combat, but I think your experiences in your local area maybe coloring your proposals a bit. First I think that at Society wide experimental procedure for new techniques is good, but given the wording you put forward hear...

They look like a turtle on a stick, i still don't think anything that flexes that much is safe to use on your hands. Don't leave them in the sun what ever you do they soften and flex even more. BTW my stainless steel one weighs less and will stop bullets. Cool, what is your source? I've been lookin...

I think this relates to that whole rules laywering thing where you can point to the phrases in law..such as "eye contact" and purposely manipulate them to gain an unchivalrous advantage over your opponent. I guess intent has alot to do with it. Chris Chris, If you are concerned with the term in any...

Cleaning Wool
I figured the most fabric junkies would be on this board.
My favorite doublet has a stain on it that must have occurred the last night I wore it last Pennsic. The material is a bright yellow wool (the fabric was purchased that color not dyed) that has a “fulledâ€Â

Hibernicus and Animal, I believe you are not addressing the central point of Richards arguments (I’m sure Richard will let me know if I’m wrong). I believe he is basing his arguments around the governing documents of the SCA say we are doing, not general practice. m for some of them. I...

Shane, Nice article, I think it was very effectively presented. When you spar how do you handle the more dangerous throws and locks? My local group has been working with just getting to the initial stage of the throw/lock and halting the fight at that point, but I believe you folks have been doing t...

Seems some places ARE with death from behind / ground. So? How often do we need to tell someone that it isn't that way at Pennsic? And for those that simply do not/will not obey, will changing the rules really help? Given the headaches we get from folks who fight it all the the time, I'm not supris...

I was impressed by the first group of fighters to do the "1000 +" fight thing. Darius was impressive in part he threw out lots of fights because he won with a one shot. That said, come on guys lets think of something new… just seeing who can do the most fights in a particular period of time is...

I lust after the information, not the particular form it takes, so if the information is strickly textual I'll go with the lowest cost source.... Howerver there are times when format matters, so for example my copy of Old Testament Minuatures was a worthy purchase to me, because the format improves ...

I"ve done quite a bit of it (I ran an experament in the East several years ago). I have never found it to be significantly more dangerous then fighting with a pollax. Keep in mind though, the primary use for halfswording is in armoured combat. For the most part the SCA fights like we are not or very...

As Asbjorn points out: to what effect? Realistically it probably didn't kill anyone but knocked them over or prevented them from moving a limb in a desired direction. I don't think I would mind that if I can be sure that you aren't going to blow out my shoulder joint or something. Captain Jamie I w...

Not precisely, I am trying to recreate foot combats from the 12th and 13th century using sword and shield. I don’t have any evidence that these were regularly done in a formal setting (tournaments at this time would have primarily done on horseback, I know of only a few examples of tournament...
