Permissive rules – rules which tell you what you can do. Restrictive rules – rules which tell you what you can’t do. Most rule sets are going to be a mix of both. Also before you can start to decide the types of rules, you also should have a clear statement of what the rules are...

Angus,

If it was the week before or the week after I'd be there and I could probably have convinced several others to come. Just poor timing.

Jester, I support your attempt to make things more open to recreating pre 1600 combat, but I think your experiences in your local area maybe coloring your proposals a bit. First I think that at Society wide experimental procedure for new techniques is good, but given the wording you put forward hear...

They look like a turtle on a stick, i still don't think anything that flexes that much is safe to use on your hands. Don't leave them in the sun what ever you do they soften and flex even more. BTW my stainless steel one weighs less and will stop bullets. Cool, what is your source? I've been lookin...

That wouldn't work either though, unless you got eye contact, the shots thrown over the shoulder shouldn't be taken because you don't have eye contact.

Essentially given this rule, if you close your eyes you can't be struck, but neither can you hit anyone else.

I think this relates to that whole rules laywering thing where you can point to the phrases in law..such as "eye contact" and purposely manipulate them to gain an unchivalrous advantage over your opponent. I guess intent has alot to do with it. Chris Chris, If you are concerned with the term in any...

First all engagement, like politics and calibration, is local. Always work with your local engagement standard, even if its in direct contravention to what is written down :)

But, given the rule you have presented, he shouldn’t hit you given the “eye contact plus something elseâ€Â

Cleaning Wool

I figured the most fabric junkies would be on this board.

My favorite doublet has a stain on it that must have occurred the last night I wore it last Pennsic. The material is a bright yellow wool (the fabric was purchased that color not dyed) that has a “fulledâ€Â

Hibernicus and Animal, I believe you are not addressing the central point of Richards arguments (I’m sure Richard will let me know if I’m wrong). I believe he is basing his arguments around the governing documents of the SCA say we are doing, not general practice. m for some of them. I...

I was impressed by the first group of fighters to do the "1000 +" fight thing. Darius was impressive in part he threw out lots of fights because he won with a one shot. That said, come on guys lets think of something new… just seeing who can do the most fights in a particular period of time is...

The weapon used doesn't matter to me. I've found I enjoy most any weapon if as its used within its proper context. I've had great fun fighting with sword and round shield in a viking holmgang, with spear for a 14th century pas, and with longsword in german judicial combats.

I"ve done quite a bit of it (I ran an experament in the East several years ago). I have never found it to be significantly more dangerous then fighting with a pollax. Keep in mind though, the primary use for halfswording is in armoured combat. For the most part the SCA fights like we are not or very...

But it doesn't mean its a bad idea either.

I think the fact that folks have found the practice safe in their back yard, and another full contact combat group has found it safe, would indicate that further investigation may be warranted.

That would be a great reason for a tournament between the two groups, of course the question would be whether the prize be claiming or not claiming Duke Ronald as a member…:)

In all seriousness, being able to attend a practice that Duke Ronald regularly attends is a very good thing.
