Counted Blows, Sword and Shield event for the HCS at Pennsic
Counted Blows, Sword and Shield event for the HCS at Pennsic I’m considering adding another event to the HCS this year Weapon & Shield with counted blows. I would probably run it on the first Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Anyone interested? There is no appearance requirement for these combats....

From a simple liability standpoint, if we were starting from scratch less is better. The more you require, the more you have to check for. If we were starting from scratch we might consider not requiring anything beyond a helmet. For safety I think society mins minus the kidney protection would be f...

This went to the Battlefield Cooridinator. After much soul searching I decided to do armoured rather then unarmoured longsword. Now I'll see what times I get. Wednesday 11th Pas du Dragon Noir (A Historic Combat Series Event) There are no appearance requirements to participate in this combat. The Pa...

I have used them in the past. What seems to work best is if you can get a relatively full wool that has some stretch to it an then just wrap them around and tuck them into themselves -Cet, who posts on this board uses them with success. My attempts have used safety pins and haven't worked nearly as ...

And on cue : Of course Ebonwolfe, Bloodguard, etc is going to be more effective. Those guys have been putting on armour together for years, are all high caliber fighters, and hit with shock and power. What I have found most remarkable about Bloodguard is that while Duke Andreas has a small pool of ...

The drawback to being left handed is a lot of us plateau at a certain level, because there are smaller number of teachers who can adapt to the difference in shield side. Many (certainly not all) of the better left handed fighters tend to be self taught and very idiosyncratic in style, and are not ne...

Alaric, I didn't want to repost everything since I think the formats on the older combats work well: Entry requirements Must be attempting to do a portrayal of a pre 1600 warrior wearing predominately steel armour (mild, stainless, spring etc. are all acceptable). No exposed plastic. Even nicely cov...

What is the guy in the center holding the higher end of the chest wearing on his neck?
I have a guess but I’m not sure.
Also what is the fellow in the window holding the pot wearing on his head.
Thanks

East Kingdom currently uses Society standards for weapons and armour regs (but still uses its own combat conventions). A 7 ½ foot pollarm of either type would be fine. In the 90’s there was a point where 7 ½ foot unpadded polarms were allowed, but only 6 foot padded pollarms were allowe...

It is a modern combat game that really does not significantly resemble war or grand melee. It would require significant changes in the rules to recreate or simulate either. I would love to see the SCA do scenarios which would recreate or simulate a battle at Pennsic, but I have not seen a serious at...

Jester, I think you should try it. There seems to be a market, at least among fighters in my area who practice often. When this issue came up a few years ago, I quizzed folks at the practices I attend. A long lasting substitute (3+ years) with the striking qualities of rattan could be priced in the ...

No, don’t limit your blow force, but the majority of sword and buckler combats for which we have evidence are unarmoured. The manuals seem to show a single good blow finishes most combats. As to how to structure the combats it depends on your approach. I set up the HCS as a transitional step ...

Alan Given the type of armour used, we would have to be less accurate in some of the techniques if we used rebated steel. For example in the Plate and mail tourney it would be difficult to portray someone wearing an open face helm (simulated by the bargrill) and allow face thrusting with steel sword...

Historic Combat Series
Historic Combat Series (Iknow the website content is dated, my fault, sorry) What do folks want for this year? As always I'm looking for new ideas and folks willing to run combats. My guidelines are that the combat has to center around recreating some aspect of pre 1600 combat. Ideally it would evok...

If you are approaching SCA comb...

Yes, you can, and yes, we might. However my biggest fear is stagnation. As someone else pointed out, the SCA _IS_ stagnating. Our "recruitments" are down, and while I cherish the old growth here, new growth is always needed to keep something vibrant and youthful. Anything that would make the bar mu...
