Do they give context for any of the pictures? Are they showing combat in battle or in tournament? Determining if large shields (not the odd shields that are sometimes shown in judicial combat) were ever commonly used in foot tourneys at any time in Europe before 1600 is one of my personal interests....

Bascot, The SCA corporate level rules don't ban guige straps (a long strap which allows a shield to be slung from the shoulder or around the neck) although a kingdom might have a rule against it. I can't speak for the West Kindgom rules, but the 90 degree rule has not been in the corporate level rule book since at least the December 2000 revision. There is an excessive force rule though.

I prefer not to fall down in tourney (its not historic and it strengthens the false concept that we are dying on the field). What I prefer to do (and I admit I forget at times), is shout "well struck", go to one knee, reverse my sword, and tell my opponent that he has done his Lady great honor today...
