Dmitry, I wasn't out there fighting this year, but I was the line marhsal right at the sideline where the combat happened. From what I could see the mid made the same two mistakes they've made in several previous battles. They punched the middle the middle and didn't capitalize on it immediately (re...

Auto, Sorry if I came off as though this attitude was common, but I was at every event based champions practice this year, and most of them for the past 5. I appologize. See that’s the thing V, I don't know whether its "just smack talk" or not. We've talked before about how different the culture of the North East is from your area. There are many cases where I know comments like this are meant to be jokes or meant to "Psych up" folks (which I admit is becoming mor...

I've seen folks get away with backwards and side rolls. Remember that your doing something unexpected. This can bother a lot of folks Although it might reduce the likelyhood of it working I'd suggest warning your opponent befor the bout. Don't throw while your on the ground, wait until you have your...

How folks interpret grappling depends a lot on your area Edwin, and even then it will still vary some. The East has probably the most limited interpretation I've run into. Its only grappling if you grab. In other areas anything other than a percusive strike with a weaopon to a body part seems to dra...

It’s interesting that this thread has become very focused on calibration. I know there has been accusations and instances of either vastly different standards or out right cheating in the Unbelted battles, but I’m thinking that this, is more of a symptom then a cause. In most every battle I’ve...

At during the Sword and Buckler tourney at Pennsic we used a rule that the hands couldn't be specificaly targeted but if they were struck it was a good blow. Basically it got rid of all of the basket and gauntlet blocking you normally see. Hushgirl, I'm not sure if that was a serious reply or a joke...

I agree with a lot of what your saying Cheval. But I don’t think the marshallate is just doing to much, I think its also doing to little. We are supposed to be attempting to recreate medieval combat, so we should be trying to look at history and trying to recreate (i.e do the same) for what we can...

Lots of different terms are used in period, as well as in the literature written about period, but in general my impression is: gambeson - thick and padded (stuffed with tow), its armour in and of itself, as well as being used OVER mail not under. You see start to see them after the Crusades, and th...

Dissident opinion here. Only worry about this if you care about historical heraldry and don’t mind being a little different SCA heraldry and historic heraldry overlap but are in some cases exclusive. For example the SCA allows many charges that are not seen in period, and disallows many that are. ...

Basically what is needed is a list the will fall over or give way if someone runs into it. I stumbled on a simple way to make a list fence that does just that when I was making one for last Pennsic. I took a 4X4 and put a piece 3 ft piece of 3/8 (I’ll double check the thickness when I get home) re...
