So - I'm looking for a mid to late 15th century helm, SCA legal. Who, what where, when and how much? :)
Like sallets and barbutes, could live with an armet or closed helm.
Recommendations?

Looking at the Kings lance bellows sallet - nice. Interesting that he says quite specifically NOT for SCA combat, when it's 16 guage, which I though was allowable. Incidentally, the sallet I recieved is 2mm steel, so about 14guage I think.

Update - just had a phone call - the helm will be returned for a refund. Very polite and friendly to deal with. Apologised wholeheartedly.

I hope so - I like these style helms and overall the construction is pretty good, nicely finished and sturdy. Just can't wear it to fight, which kind of defeats the object.

It sits on my dang nose (and I do not have an large nose) any blow to the visor, in re-enactment or SCA combat would be painful! Having been looking forward to getting this I'm gutted. Dropped the guy an e-mail, as he asked, this morning - when I phoned his mobile he was in India!) he said he'd be c...

Disappointed! :(

So, the helm I've been waiting for for over a month has arrived. Bellows visored sallet. At first glance looked good, but visor seemed flat. Tried it on - visor short - tip of chin protrudes, and visor WAY flatter than pic on the site, so flat it squashes my nose! . So essentially it's no good to me...

Can't remember - Julie should know. Things good today. Wode for the blue probably in the Southern Europe area, possibly indigo (same family of plant IIRC, again would have to check). Trouble with wode/indigo is that they are, again IIRC, oxygen activated, that is to say that the colour only develops...

As my good lady now, spins, dyes and weaves her own fabric ( on a small scale!) I have to agree with Tim that the border was likely applied after weaving, in the form of some form of braid (tablet weave?). That being said I always find Greg's enthusiasm for his subject, and sheer energy in producing...

Yep - I can accept that. A lot of it is down to having faith in the sources of information. Thus, to small children, it is a FACT that Father Christmas/Santa Claus exists, generally because they take on faith what they are told, whereas adults (and older children) are in possession of different "pro...

Then it seems, that to some degree, we all agree. I am happy to accept that what is a fact to me, is not necessarily a fact to you, because you are not in possession of the proof. It remains a fact, but only if you possess the proof. So, in conclusion, a fact can be a non-fact, depending on your poi...

Okay Greg, NOT trying to start a war here incidentally, lol. Is it not an accepted fact that the Universe is infinite? Proof? Admittedly, I may be mis-categorizing theories as theorems. However - surely a religious person would say that it is a fact that God exists, although the evidence we have is ...

Greg, sometimes you make... umm.....interesting statements

The point is that if there is no proof, then it's not a fact

Sorry - totally disagree with this. I'm sure others will too. There's no proof that your statement is true, therefore, it's not a fact :P

Looks like a fantasy piece to me, with persian influences. The helm seems impractical - no breathes. Sure, you could breathe behind it, but it'd be restrictive.
Looks nice, in an odd sort of way.
If this is a historical piece, it's very unusual- possibly a parade piece, what with the tinsel!
