Thanks Trevor.
Apparently (according to their site) all Ashcraft Baker helms have 12guage tops and 14 guage back and sides - so that would seem to fit the bill!

Yeah it's nice - trouble is shipping - severely limits what I can spend as it would probably be about $40 - $50 to ship it to England I have a feeling I may end up buying some 14guage sheet steel and making a butt-ugly great helm....a bit like this one...... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...

Aonghus - "wash" gambeson? Woss that then? My padded jack hasn't been washed since I got it (about 15 years ago). Covered in mail rub, blood, sweat, dirt, grime, cowsh@t and probably worse! It probably counts as armour in its own right! It is actually now a protected eco-system and Site of Special S...

Yeah - I think I'll ask/look about for something cheap (ish) New helm not to be intereferd with (orders of She - who must be obeyed-). Cheers Again. Oh whilst on the subject - kidney area (I believe lower back, kidneys and short ribs) must be protected by at least heavy leather I believe. How does a ...

Thanks for the replies and good advice guys. As it happems I've got an A&C helm on it's way (shipped earlier this week) - http://armourandcastings.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=31_32&products_id=52 Now, I know it'll need something extra to make it SCA legal, but I don't really want to make perm...

Fair points!
I quite like this wee number (same seller)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6522226676&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Edit - For interest - would a helm like that require a chinstrap? It would seem to be more than a snug fit.

SCA suitable?
Q. Is this helm suitable (when padded etc) for SCA heavy combat. The visor gap looks OK to me - could probably be beaten into submission if no. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6522865779&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT It's not really the sort of helm I want, but I'mm looking to ge...

Sale/Trade - 4 x 1797 George 3 Cartwheel pennies
Hi guys, I know these may well not be of interest to anyone on this Archive, on the otherhand, they might! Not a coin dealer myself but have read the stuff a bit so I'd grade these fine to extra-fine (any experts please feel free to correct me) 1797 George the Third Cartwheel pennies. Offers of Mone...

To the best of my knowledge - sabre (Huns didn't use a sabre, they used a straight-blade sword) , mace or fokos (pr fokosh). A Fokos (a Magyar weapon - may have been used by others) is a form of axe - often "backed" with a variety of differents things - hammer, spike, ball etc. I believe the Red Kag...

Dragnar, Indeed - outsourcing. Either that or I may by several small pieces like the mantles that Cat makes, or that you might make, for resale. Also I have found that pieces of mail sell fairly well, eg 12 x 12 inch square, or pieces that I can attach to leather vambraces or greaves. I will however...
