Au contraire! All due respect to Audax but regarding cloaks I believe that you will find that a cloak sans hood would be prevalent. For most of the historic period where cloaks were worn no hood was more common than hooded with regard to cloaks. A seperate hood with a yoke was more common and more ...

There was indeed a special tool used for extracting sling bullets, though I don't think it was a speculum of this level of intricacy. Might have been a simpler lever-type speculum, or simply a specially-shaped probe/scoopy thing. I'm not sure if the experts are agreed. I've also heard that this spi...

Okay - finished this a couple of weeks ago, just got around to photos. Took about 10-12 hours work, all hand-cut and punched, laced etc. No hardeneing and deliberately not historically correct materials (beacause I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy making it enough to finish, so I went with what I had, leath...

I believe I'd be correct in saying that the closest thing to a Viking kite shield would be the Norman Kite shield, as historically documented. The Normans, being Viking descendants, is stretching, but there you go.

Perhaps I need to rephrase the question to encompass a wider answer.

So - what cultures, in contact with the Romans - up to 500 AD (approx) - would have used leather lamellar?
And where might one find illustrations.

Armour Roman Period leather lamellar ? Cultures?

Hmmm...I fancy having a go at making some lamellar - from leather. Currently I am suffering from a Roman bug, so feel it may be interesting to make the armour and other bits and pieces for a Roman Auxiliarii (sp?) impression. However - not sure which - if any- of the various nations would fit, or wh...
