Todd Ferrante - I love that armour stand, but I am SO jealous that you have a disk sander and a dado blade set! If you tell me you have a mortiser too, I think I will have to get your address and pay you a visit. Goin' on vacation any time soon? Now I need to check out all the other sets of instruct...

French, Latin...... HA! It all still sounds Greek to me. Welcome to the Archive! Brace yourself for the barrage of project ideas that will soon lay siege to your brain. Did I spell "siege" correctly?? Who knows. I need more coffee and this forum needs a spell checker. That would be funny wouldn't it...

My head is 20.5" I suppose extra air could be pumped in. I always thought I had a slow leak somewhere anyway, so maybe my head IS supposed to be bigger. I wish I could have you make me one. Alas, I am but a poor maille maker with 3 teenage girls who love to shop. (And one who feels that I should buy...

Want to commission a pattern
Hey everyone, I am looking to possibly have a pattern made for a padded liner. If you are proficient at pattern making, please email me and I will discuss the details with you. The things I make from the pattern will be sold on my website, just so you know that up front. Thanks, Cat Ps. I would real...

Well, I've already ground most of it to shape, now I need to thin it. This stuff is over a 1/4" thick and is a bear to work with. The various grinders I am using are taking it down though, just slowly. The sawz all did a super job cutting the basic shape out. It went right through the stuff. If I co...

Thanks guys! Borax sounds like the "miracle" substance. Chris, There are quite a few things I need to obtain before I start - safety euipment being some of it. I also have about 3 or 4 other projects going right now, so I won't be getting to this right away. I can't stop myself. I keep seeing things...

I don't know if it does or not, but I tell ya what - I heated this piece up to yellow-orange and banged the crap out of it with a 2 pound sledge and it barely made a dent. I did this several times, each time reheating to yellow-orange, and you can't tell any difference in thickness from the end I hi...

Thomas, I don't know much about steel (obviously ), but I will do a spark test on the Channel Locks to see if it's similar. I really don't have any other steel to test, at least not any steel that I know anything about. Thanks for the idea! I hadn't thought about that. Cat EDIT: I DO have some rail ...

Here are some pictures of the steel and the spark test. I looked at some spark test charts on the net, but couldn't tell exactly what kind this was. Hopefully someone will be able to tell from the pics. [img]http://img.villagephot...

Thanks for the replies! It looks like it may not be high carbon steel I guess, but it would be good for a practice knife, right? One that I never plan to put an edge on, I just want to see if I can make one. As for the "spark test", well...........I kinda already did one of those once. My conclusion...

What kind of steel is this??
Someone gave me a piece of steel from a 60 somethin' car. It's a perfect rectangle, and is about a 1/4" thick (the thickness is uniform along the entire piece). I don't know what part of the car it came off of or what it's purpose was, but does anyone know if this would be good steel for a knife? It...

Thank you guys SO much for taking the time to write all of this for me! I am starting to get a better idea of what to do and what not to do. Seawolf, I don't usually work in stainless, but in the past people have sent me the wire of their choice and I then made their pieces from that. What gauge wire and what ring size would you like? I have heard that 16 gauge stainless in 5/16" rings is a good combo. How wide would you want the mantle?...

Archie and Russ, Thank you both very much! I'm still thinking it needs something, and maybe once I get the brass work on it it will really set off the color of the helm. I am also considering removing the cheek and neck pieces to get it to look more accurate. I figured that I could always put them b...
