I agree that 14 gauge steel, 5/16" rings look really good, in fact that's my favorite combination (for looks), but it's just too heavy for me. From what I can remember, it seems to me that the maille runs in weird directions on those ventails. Of course, this could simply be the way the artists drew them. They seem to cup around the chin, too. I wish I could help you, but I have yet to figure it out myself.

As an additional warning to those listed above, you can also DIE from the fumes emitted from the heating/burning of galvanized (zinc coated) steel.
