Russ, thanks for the info! Actually, the deer and elk I have do not have the blue edges. They are the same color as the flesh side, even when cut. Maybe this isn't chrome tanned? As for period appropriate colors...I'm afraid I don't know. I haven't gotten that far yet. Eventually, once I get constru...

Thanks for the responses guys. I am using the spirit dyes (HATE eco flo). I would probably guess that the elk is chrome tanned. Speaking of that, if chrome tanning is a modern process, what's the medieval equivalent? The rub tests looks good. I did that last night and this morning, and it doesn't se...

So...what exactly does Feibings do to elk leather?
I dyed a test piece of elk last night with some Feibings dye, and it seems like it's going to work ok. While the dye was still sort of wet, the leather did get a little....weird (can't really explain), but this morning it seems ok. What will this dye do to the leather over time? I figured it must no...

Tracy, Those links are awesome, and they will be very helpful! Although, it never ceases to amaze me finding out how many other skills I need to learn when starting a seemingly simple project. It's never simple, and very rarely do they require only one skill set. Leo, Thank you very much! Do you thi...

I bought a big spool of linen cord from......gotta look it up..don't remember. It's 4 ply, all twisted together. I untwist the cord so I get 4 individual strands, then take the best 3 and braid it. Once that's done, I rub it with beeswax and then burnish it with a cloth to smooth and harden the wax....

15th/16th century pouch survey
This is a pouch based off of an example found in "Purses in Pieces", and dates to the 15th and 16th centuries. If you portray 15th or 16th centuries, please take a second to view the info here and take the poll. m Here is a pic of the pouch, with more pics and info in the link above. Thank...

Karen, Thanks for the suggestion! When I find a box I think I can reproduce, I will contact the museum and see if they can help me out. I can't really tell what that is. Possibly another knop button like what's on the drawstrings. There is also some sort of thread trim along the top edge of the pouch - maybe some type of crochet, and it could be part of that. I can't get the pic to zoom in clear enough to see it, which is why I didn...

Well, I don't really want anyone's first born, as I got 'nuff rug rats as it is. And arms and legs laying around would just be....gross. (Although the dog would probably like it.) Need advice from "instock only" type merchants
Hey guys, I want to make my "business" an instock type business, but I'm unsure how to proceed. I'm working on developing some new items, but how many of each do I make? I have no idea how well they're going to sell, so I don't want to make too many of each thing until I see how it goes. I...

14th cent drawstring pouch, based off original
I just finished this up, so I thought I would share. This is a 14th century drawstring pouch, based off of an original I have a pic of. It's deerskin, and is hand sewn with waxed linen thread. The drawstring cords are 100% linen and have been braided and waxed. My goal is to develope as many pouches...

I have a 16th century pouch I'm working on that you may be interested in. It's not done yet, but I will attach a pic of where I'm at now. However, this one will not be cheap. Initial calculations look like this one will be about $175. It's made from elk leather with veg tan accents and is hand sewn....

Leather covered box
A customer requested a case with the same design as the 15th centuy Bohemian case on my site. Due to a total lack of common sense on my part, it's probably not going to work for his purposes, but I thought it turned out pretty nice, and plan to do some more in the future. The wood is poplar, and the...

How was this tooling done?
Someone posted these pics in another topic, and I'm not quite sure how the tooling was done. It doesn't look like the background has been pushed down, and the designs almost look like the leather was stretched over a wood carving instead of tooled into the leather. On the unfinished part, you can se...

Ok, so it looks like I need to split the ends of the strings in two so I end up with 4 strands stickin' out down there, install the string, then slip on 2 beads. Then I do a 4 strand braid.....but....there's 2 loops on some of these, so that would mean each of those are made up of 2 strands. Do you ...

What am I seeing here? (Trying to figure out a pouch)
Ok, I'm still fighting with this 16th century pouch, and am down to the final details. I have my little baubles made, and now just need to figure out what the heck is going' on with the braids at the ends of the drawstrings. The picture isn't clear enough fo rme to see it well, but it looks like the...
