I'm new to armouring too, so I can't really say what's best for general use, but I get rivets from here: http://www.rjleahy.com/
I've only ordered a couple of times, but it was a good experience each time.

Itchin' to do a "restoration" project
Ok, this is a bit of a strange post, but I have an urge to buy some rusted up armour so I can get some sanding practice in. I have no idea what I'm looking for in particular, but it needs to be cheap. Like I said, I don't have anything specific in mind, so post what ya got, and if something catches ...

Ok, I think I am beginning to see how it should be made. Maybe something with a shallow curve? Jason, I appreciate your offer! If I get this figured out, I will email you a sketch and you can let me know how much you want. Maybe if I email the guy who made the gorget pictured above, he will send me ...

Also, here is the look I eventually want to reproduce. (I realize that this will probably take years of practice.) Does the look of the finished rope have more to do with the shape of the tool, or with the skill of the person using it? If you need a certain shape to even begin to think about making ...

Thanks so much for the pics! That helps alot! Is that chisel flat, or is it curved like.... I don't know what the proper term is, but maybe a spoon chisel? (Or maybe a gouge?) Again, thanks so much! Cat Ps. I have more questions on the roping process, so I'm going to post something in the design/con...

Looking for a tool for adding roping to rolls
Ok, I'm not real sure what you are supposed to use to for doing the roping on rolls, but does anyone sell these things? I think I've heard people say something about a crescent shaped chisel, and there is some kind of die (?) I've seen, and I think I would prefer the die.
Thanks,
Cat
Thanks,

Jason Smith, You're very kind. I wish I shared your confidence. I am never completely happy with stuff I make, although I have had a couple of things turn out pretty much like I had envisioned. Maybe I just need more practice. Irish, Thanks so much for those pics! It really helps to see it all toget...

Jason, That pic is perfect. It makes perfect sense! By the way, what diameter is the pin that goes through that hinge, and how long and wide do I make the slots in order to fit that diameter? Andreas, if I get this going and it looks halfway decent, I will be sure to post progress pics. Don't hold y...

Wade, the cut outs make sense. Thanks for explaining their purpose! I'm still a bit confused about the hinge though. First, let me say that I'm really sorry for asking so many questions. I really feel like I'm bugging you now, so if you're tired of answering, I completely understand. What I don't un...

Ok, after reviewing the pics, I've ended up with more questions. I hope these aren't stupid questions. I don't have any experience with this kind of thing, so the answers may very well be obvious to people who are more familiar. I apologize in advance if this is something I should know already, and ...

Yes, thank you so much for posting those! I have been mulling over these all day in an attempt to come up with some coherent questions, and I will probably have a couple if you don't mind. Some of it I have figured out myself from spending time looking at them, but I will probably have a few others ...

Thanks so much guys! I appreciate all of the help! I think I am getting a better idea of how it's supposed to work. I'm not familiar enough with pauldrons to visualize how those pins would connect to them, though. Would there be a hole somewhere on the pauldrons that these pins would go up through? ...

Jason, Thanks so much! I knew I had gotten info from someone on this before, so I apologize for you having to go to the trouble again. I will email Wade if you don't think he'd mind, and maybe he wouldn't mind getting me some pics of the inside and back. (cause I'm still confused, but that's not sur...

In looking at the picture again, is it possible that the inner shoulder piece (the rather skinny piece between the shoulder cap and the rest of the gorget) is attached to the gorget via the pivot and catch pins? If so, that would stabilize it some, but would probably mean that that inner piece is no...

Thanks for the link! That one looks like it might be similar, but I'm really having a hard time seeing how this thing could open. I thought that maybe it would have lames coming off of those shoulder caps, but I can't see how it would work. I do have one other picture that someone highlighted for me...

Gorget ? - need pics w/one as part of whole suit
For a LONG time now, I have been eyeballing this particular gorget as a project I eventually want to make. Before I make an attempt, I need a bit more info on how this would have fit in with the rest of the suit. For now, I have a couple of questions - would the helm from such a suit be situated so ...
