Ok, so I understand that the consensus/tradition in some places is that we don't do this, but are there actually any rules against it? Jester I think I know where your going with this. I think this is one of those do you want there to be a rule cases? If so It probably won't be to anyones advantage...

[SCA] Cross-checking/hafting ok?
See, this is why I love dialogue. I've been running around all these years thinking that we're not allowed to make weapon to body contact with anything other than the striking/cutting/thrusting portion of the weapon. Then a knight in my kingdom points out that cross-checking someone with the haft of...

I *browsed* this article at lunch today. I have nothing derogatory to say about it but it doesn't contain much information that a ten minute (if that) google search wouldn't turn up. It certainly looks favorably upon martial systems with Western roots and doesn't do any harm. I would re-title this a...

Did you have a copy of the rules with you? I suggest to all fighters that they carry a copy of the Society and Kingdom rules with them in their armor bag. I think it should be required for Marshals (actually for officers at all levels). The number of participants we have who don't know or understand...

And siloflex is fine... I guess 'cause the name has "flex" in it... It seems by his Grace's quote that Siloflex would also be in question. It is a plastic "flex" or not. Uhm.... Offensive shields are not banned in the SCA (at least at the Society level). They simply have to be designed for that purpose and be passed by the marshallate. As I understand it the problem with offensive shields was: 1) punch daggers sticking out from the edge of shields and 2) shield spik...

Just a new look at things. I stepped away from I.33 for a while because I was obsessing. Literally. I was carrying 20 pounds worth of books, notes and reference materials with me everywhere I went. I was told by somebody who knew more than me that it would be a bad idea. He said that it would appear that I wanted to propose and experiment in the SCA, and thus a rabble rouser. The question wasn't put to me. Hugh is much more experienced and has better education on this. He doesn't need to ask my advice. The question he posed related to the ubergreiffen. Talhoffers Sword and Buckler
Hugh Knight (SKA Count Sir Rhys ap Harlech) just revamped his interpretation of this material and posed a question. I attempted to answer it (I was wrong, but that's okay), pulled out my old flowchart, accidentally moved one of the images and stumbled on to this. Visually the interpretation works (l...

Fascinating! I'd never taken more than a passing glance at I.33, but this is genuinely interesting. Much different from Fiore's "active defense" and worlds different from Talhoffer's constant agression. The principals at work seem to be slight direction changes, economy of movement, and control of ...

According to our rules, yes we are killing our opponents. Our rules also allow for not killing our opponents, however. HOTBUTTON RANT ON -> This basically boils down to a lack of defined intent. SCA combat can be whatever you want it to be. This creates problems when two people with very different i...

First off show me a historical sword with a butt spike. You cant. Its totally rediculous. Take a look at the Fiore material (see the section on longsword at the Knights of the Wild Rose website). There are other documented instances of buttspikes on greatswords but I don't have them to hand. They a...
