The following message was just sent to the Outlands e-list. Greetings unto the Good People of the Outlands, Hello my friends. I thought I should post my understanding of the "Tomuki Crown" to help us all gain understanding and to help us move on. I involved myself after the fact as an Authorizing Ma...

Baton combat: Standard swords with no marked edges. Encourage the fighters to make the swords bright. Small number of fighters so go with a round robin format (everyone fights everyone). Each bout lasts until the marshal in charge decides that it is done (rule of thumb: if one fighter gets five hits...

Grabbing the blade of your own weapon. Brought about by the proliferation of plate armor in the latter half of the 14th Century. A sword cut to plate does little except pass concussive force through. So sword users modified their techniques. By grasping the blade of their sword with their left hand ...

For the left-handed fighter vs a right-handed f: stand out of range with my sword resting on my shoulder, drop my hand down to start the blade moving fast (and make it look like a cut), lunge forward and left with my left foot to close the range as I turn the cut into a thrust to the face. I continue to work on I.33. Here is a partial working interpretation of the 1st Sequence of Instruction: 1st Ward (UnderArm) vs. Half-Shield. The combat starts with both combatants Out Of Distance (which means that neither can hit the other, even if they take a step) and in a nebulous and undefined ...

It's an SCA-centric group looking at Medieval Spain. I didn't find anything of use in a quick search of the files, but the links might take you to some decent information.

Kind of an all encompassing statement, in my opinion. It all depends on the specific combat scenario. Formal combats had rules that governed the conduct of the participants. Those rules specifically addressed issues like this. Our 're-creations' should do the same. Statements like this become proble...

-Rotating the shield to place the vertical axis of the grip directly in line with the blow. -Aggressive blocking to take the force of the blow on the boss rather than the edge. -Using the sword to parry/deflect and then transferring control to the shield (thus eliminating any sword to shield impact).
