I was called to task for 'overstating' the amount of grappling/wrestling that goes on in the SCA. A quick websearch turned up some interesting links to upcoming SCA events at which wrestling (outside of rattan and rapier combat) is an announced part of the event.

Otto,

You can still participate without doing a military persona. Consider portraying a clerk. Low cost and exceedingly under-represented in both the SCA and living history.

[SCA] Rules that need clarifying #4

Grappling. It's a poorly labeled catch-all category. The definition in the Marshals Handbook is broad and vague. The SEM recently clarified this definition, somewhat, though I have yet to see the clarification be reported to the BoD as required by Corpora (and I could very well have missed this). Fo...

Again.... what game are we playing? If we are attempting to simulate warfare then striking from behind should be the case. However, given that the SCA has a non-existent training program and almost no statements governing the intent of our combat simulations this will lead to bad-blood at the very l...

This means that any cutting edges must be marked with contrasting tape, Huh? Cutting edges must be marked with contrasting tape. What do you really think it must contrast with, the rest of the blade, your garb, your auto???? not that all edged weapons must have an edge. Maybe I've been hit in the h...

No one has EVER told me I needed a wrist strap on my basket hilts. Course, my hockey gloves "lock" into em pretty good.. I often leave the glove in the hilt and take my hand out. Spear, as mentioned above, is nto a "one handed weapon" even if you are using a buckler. No wrist strap needed. Maeryk B...

I don't see that the rules says you have to have an edge. If that is what you want to do with it, just tape the stick and its all "flat". OOOOOHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! NOW, I get it. (Yes, I really am this slow sometimes.) Such a weapon would be useless in standard SCA combat (if the marshals even allowed ...

Actually, I like the idea of letting your opponent decide whether to yield or to fight. I think it would be entirely appropriate, and completely within the rules, to have a scenario where you let your opponent know that you are behind them by laying your weapon (any weapon) on their shoulder and dec...

Agreed. Unless you're volunteering I'll just finish off the piece and send it to TI with the understanding that they are free to edit the living daylights out of it. :)

The writing is atrocious, but the basic information is sound and folks can take that and run with it.

Same in the Outlands. Place your spear (or pole) on their shoulder such that the point sticks out in front of them so that when they turn their head they will see it. Make the declaration. Works like a charm.

This is my second draft on this article (which I had forgotten about until recently when I thought "This would be a good idea" and then said "Say, didn't I start something like that?"). First draft was at: m I think I have addressed all the concerns regarding the substance of the article. I'm adding...

I agree. To me, placing your sword on me is NOT a good blow, but thats for another topic... How hard shall I strike you? As hard as I usually do when I might need to blow through some of your defense? Just enought to let you know I'm there? How much is that? Not trying to be snarky or difficult, bu...

I agree with everything you said, Richard. But if we can't clarify the game, then perhaps we could clarify the scenarios. Hmm.... I like death from behind: striking your opponent a telling blow while he is not facing you. I have played with this convention in Markland and in SCA-style combat with friends. It works nicely. We sometimes get frayed tempers, but since we are friends we work it out. And that's why it doesn'...

I guess my point is that, according to what I have seen in the rules, you can't take the field with what is essentially a standard SCA sword minus the edge markings. Or can you?

I'm making some notes on simulating a behourd in SCA combat and I'd like to know if folks could do this or not.

Re: [SCA] Rules that need clarifying #3

A good point, but not an accurate comparison. What if you are tossing the frisbee around and the park ranger comes over and tells you that you can't toss the frisbee around because this park is only for playing disc golf. So you ask to see the regulation and he tells you "Hey, we've got rules to cov...

What you need to understand is that you must decide and discover your own reasons, Jester. If you can 't do that, then everything is pretty much meaningless. [SCA] Rules that need clarifying #3

What's the point? Why does SCA combat exist? Does it have a purpose? A goal? Are we trying to accomplish something? This point is not addressed in any of the governing documents. It is addressed, to a degree, in the introduction of the Marshals Handbook (online, edition of November 2000) where it is...

Is it possible to make a baton of the type used in some behourdim in the SCA? I imagine making a sword and simply leaving the contrasting tape that marks the edge off. This isn’t a question of whether you like them or not, it’s a question of kingdom practice. Are thrusts to the side, back and top of the head good blows in your kingdom? Is it specifically laid out in your kingdom fighting standards? If yes, can you point me to the reference? Hmm.... ...
