And, of course, there's my personal favorite for those times when gakking one guy from behind simply won't cause enough chaos.... start yelling orders. Sometimes it works, and when it doesn't your opponents will kindly turn around to engage you.

My experience with DFB is that the better fighters on the west coast simply don't use it even when they are able to. It promotes dishonorable combat, so many of the West Coast Knights won't even consider using it. It's a bad rule, and like Vitus, I am against it. Death on the Ground, however, shoul...

I like it. It allows for scenarios that more closely approach 'war'. I think it should be an optional rule, one that must be announced prior to the beginning of combat.

[SCA] Are the rules proscriptive or prescriptive?

Just what the topic says. We have the rules of the list published in Corpora and republished in the Marshals Handbook along with the specific rules governing rattan and rapier combat. Do the rules lay out what is permitted (and by extension anything that is not covered in the rules is forbidden) or ...

If you are the author of a piece on rattan combat in the SCA and would like to see your piece published or re-published on the Internet please contact me. There are at least two sites on the internet that deal with this type of material. Both myself and the Legio Draconis publish new pieces and re-p...

Yep. You're correct on all counts, Asbjorn. Perhaps it would be a good idea for the Marshallate to address the basic issue of proscriptive or permissive rules? There seem to be some different opinions floating around. That's an excellent point regarding the legality of these techniques. I guess my e...

Nevertheless, if the kings and the marshallate as a whole and enough heavies to get up an argument are in favor of allowing CA, it is inaccurate to say "we" don't want it. You would need permission because in some places, people are EXTREMELY RESISTANT to any form of combat that threatens the SCA "standard". Re: [SCA] Alternate Armour & End-Bout Scenarios

Why would you need to get special permission to use counted blows? If these were written down quite a while ago I could understand but counted blows are, if not fairly common, at least not really very rare. Rob It was a consistency issue. Instead of saying 'this rule can be used without getting per...

[SCA] Alternate Armour & End-Bout Scenarios

The text below is quoted from a message I sent on the SCA Period Combat list. I have found it to be the opinion of the Marshallate (Society level deputy marshals) that such activity is already permitted or, at least, is not forbidden by the Society level rules. I wrote this proposal as a way of maki...

The allusion to extra work for the Marshallate is, in my opinion, a red herring. The easy way to deal with this is delegation. The Society is well aware of this. All fighting is optional.
